Russell J. Leng '60 is the James Jermain Professor Emeritus of Political Economy and International Law at Middlebury College. A full-time member of the faculty for 41 years before his retirement in 2007, he continues to teach an advanced senior seminar at Middlebury, classes at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and an online course for alumni. The Middlebury resident has also taught at Alumni College and was that program’s director for several years. Leng, who earned a PhD from American University in 1967, was a foreign policy analyst for the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress prior to accepting Middlebury’s offer to join the faculty in 1966. His research on the behavioral correlates of war has resulted in two books and numerous articles, and he continues to study international conflict behavior with his current focus on the use of negotiation in militarized disputes.
