The CFA provides a stimulating environment for a variety of arts activities. All of its spaces - even its lobbies and outdoor spaces - are laboratories for artistic exploration. Guest artists and scholars from wide-ranging traditions and points of view are welcomed at Middlebury each year. The CFA comprises 150,000 square feet, and is the home of the theatre, music, and dance programs at the College; a 400-seat concert hall; the 200-seat Seeler Studio Theatre; a dance theatre; and the Middlebury College Museum of Art.
The building was commissioned in 1987 and completed in 1992. There is also a popular misconception that the building was constructed backwards, because the courtyard does not face the road, but instead toward a beautiful artificial lake and various sculptures installed since the opening of the building in 1992, thanks to the work of the Committee for Art in Public Places.
