Stephen A. Freeman International Center includes three small dining facilities known as Hamlin, Freeman, and Cook. The latter is used for lunch-time language tables, where students pledge to speak only the language of the table (no English allowed) in the presence of a professor and student waiters speaking the language of the table. Elsewhere in the building are classrooms and offices for the German, Russian, and Japanese Studies departments, as well as Dining Services. On the dining level of the building is the Jewish Center, where students come together each week for a short Shabbat service followed by Friday evening dinner. The Jewish Center consists of a kitchen and a small meeting room used for the Jewish Center Speaker Series and weekly Hillel lunch meetings.

History

Originally constructed as the Social Dining Units designed to foster student interaction, the facility was renamed in 1993 in honor of Stephen Freeman who served as professor of French from 1925-1970.

History of Translation: Theory and Practice
In this course we will examine the history and practice of the act of translation in a global context. Readings will include selected theoretical works by authors such as Goethe, Benjamin, Borges, Jakobson, Derrida, and Appiah, as well as studies of the specific technical and cultural challenges translators have faced in carrying texts across cultural boundaries. As a final project, students will either attempt their own translation of an artistic text into English (with an accompanying explanation of their translation method) or write a research paper engaging with the theories examined in the course. 3 hrs. sem.

The Brain: In Sickness and In Health
Neuroscience is a rapidly advancing area of science. We will explore the biology of the brain to help shed light on the mysteries of how humans and other species think, act, and feel. We will address broad questions such as: How is the brain constructed and how does it normally work? How does study of the brain help us understand topics such as depression, Parkinson's disease, autism, perceptual disorders, and amnesia? Topics will be addressed through lecture, discussion, activities, library research, oral presentations, and writing. The Keys to Dan Brown’s /Inferno/
In this project-oriented seminar we will seek to examine, identify, and distinguish fact from fiction in the Dan Brown novel, Inferno (May 2013) popularized already on television and social media. We will explore in greater depth the codes, symbols, and secret passageways of Florence, Dante’s own Inferno, and Brown’s other novels. We will create and publish electronically a 21st century illustrated annotated guide to the novel using the latest in new technologies, wikis, Google mapping, graphics, and video.

Environmental Literature and Justice
In this seminar we will embark on an exploration of environmental issues in American literary narratives. We will look at the environmental movement in the U.S. and read, analyze, discuss, and write about texts such as: Carson’s landmark work of 20th century environmental consciousness-raising, Silent Spring; Steinbeck’s novel about Dust Bowl migrants, The Grapes of Wrath; Silko’s protest against uranium mining and nuclear testing on indigenous lands in Ceremony; and Callenbach’s vision of an ecologically sustainable world in Ecotopia. By considering these and several other texts, we will also investigate environmental issues through the lens of the environmental justice movement and take a closer look at today’s environmental inequalities, encompassing race, class, and gender. 3 hrs. sem.

German Theatre in Action
In this course, students will prepare and stage a full production of a German play. After five weeks of seminar-style academic discussions of this work in context (the genre, the author, the topic, the time) and aspects of theatrical performance (theory), the class will prepare the show for the last week of the semester (two rehearsals/ week). Reasonable Doubts
This course gives an introduction to various responses to the idea of "Enlightenment" and the "Age of Reason" in eighteenth century German literature and culture. Starting with definitions of the term "Aufklärung" students will gain familiarity with proponents and critics of this notion as well as modern twentieth century approaches to it. We will focus on works by Kant, Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Lenz, and Kleist and the critical reflections of Adorno, Habermas, Lyotard, and Foucault, among others.
