Laforce is senior apartment-style living that is part of the Ross complex and is highly desired for it's proximity to Ross Dining Hall.

History

The building is named in memory of Arnold LaForce '35, a trustee of Middlebury College from 1961 to 1980 and chair of the board from 1975 to 1980.  Mr LaForce, who received his M.B.A. from New York University in 1938, was a financial and investment consultant, and also the author of several books on investment and financial subjects.  As a member of the Middlebury board for two decades, he worked closely with Presidents Armstrong and Robison on the growth and development of the College in the 1960s and 1970s.

Beginning Arabic I
The goal of this course is to begin developing reading, speaking, listening, writing, and cultural skills in Arabic. This course stresses written and oral communication, using both formal Arabic and some Egyptian dialect. Independent Study
In this course students complete individual projects involving laboratory and/or field research or extensive library study on a topic chosen by the student and a faculty advisor. Prior to registering for BIOL 0500, a student must have discussed and agreed upon a project topic with a member of the Biology Department faculty. Additional requirements include participation in weekly meetings with disciplinary sub-groups and attending all Biology Department seminars. Intensive Beginning Italian
This course is an introduction to the Italian language that provides a foundation in both spoken and written Italian. Focus on the spoken language encourages rapid mastery of the basic structures and vocabulary of contemporary Italian. The exclusive use of Italian in dialogue situations and vocabulary building encourages the student to develop skills in a personalized context. Conversation and drill are stimulated and fostered through active reference to popular Italian music, authentic props, and slides of Italian everyday life and culture. Epoche della letteratura italiana I: introduzione al periodo moderno
This course acquaints students with the major 19th and 20th century works and movements and develops the students' linguistic, critical, and analytical skills. The readings will introduce literary genres within a chronological framework. Special emphasis will be placed on the skill of writing in Italian.
