The Donald Everett Axinn Center for Literary and Cultural Studies opened in 2008. The Center is home to the departments of History and English and American Literatures, as well as the programs in American Studies and Film and Media Culture. It features state-of-the-art classrooms and offices, as well as screening rooms, and a large media editing suite, and a winter garden looking to the south. Located on the historic Old Stone Row quad, the 82,400 square foot project preserved the original neoclassical Starr Library and the modernist Shepley Pavilion Reading Room, and added 50,000 square feet of new space.

History

Starr Library was built for the College's centennial in 1900, in response to a growing collection and with the help of a generous bequest of Egbert Starr. It was enlarged in 1925 to include two wings, given by his son Allen Starr. It was the first campus building constructed out of Vermont marble. The Meredith Wing of 1979 added much-needed space for shelving and study. With the renovations, some of these additions will be removed to place emphasis on the look of the original library building, and much of the original interior beauty will also be restored.

Chinese Cinema

Chinese Cinema
This course, taught in English, surveys the history of movies in China since the 1930s and also offers an in-depth look at the work of: China's fifth-generation directors of the 1980s and their successors up to the present; Taiwan's new wave; and Hong Kong popular cinema, including martial arts film. Our focus is the screening and discussion of films such as The Goddess (a 1934 silent classic), Stage Sisters (1965; directed by the influential Xie Jin), the controversial Yellow Earth (1984), In the Heat of the Sun (a 1994 break with the conventional representation of the Cultural Revolution), Yang Dechang's masterpiece A One and a Two (2000), and Still Life (Jia Zhangke's 2006 meditation on displacement near the Three Gorges Dam). The course is designed to help students understand the place of cinema in Chinese culture and develop the analytical tools necessary for the informed viewing and study of Chinese film. Traditional Chinese Novels

Traditional Chinese Novels (in translation)
This seminar focuses on pre-modern Chinese full-length novels, which rose and matured during the Ming-Qing period. Students will read the "masterworks" of this genre, including Three Kingdoms (the epic deeds of heroes of the Chinese civil war of the second and third centuries), Outlaws of the Marsh (picaresque tales of Chinese Robin Hoods, as it were), The Journey to the West (a comic Buddhist-Daoist allegory better known in English as Monkey), The Plum in the Golden Vase (an erotic novel of manners), The Scholars (a social satire), and The Story of the Stone-The Dream of the Red Chamber (widely recognized as a masterpiece of world literature); all are beloved and long treasured by the Chinese. British Literature and Culture: the Poetics of Entertainment
"Entertain" now means “amuse” or “divert,” but in the Middle Ages and Renaissance it meant, more seriously, “hold together” in community. We will explore poetic “entertainment” as it evolved from before the Conquest (1066) through the Restoration (1660). Recurring themes include hospitality, gift-exchange, love, marriage, festival, politics, and friendship, all involving gender, class, and nationality. Our topic will also entail exploring what has made works canonical and the contribution of the canon to our own sense of community. In this course students will gain a theoretical understanding of the ways moving images and sounds communicate, as well as practical experience creating time-based work. We will study examples of moving images as we use cameras, sound recorders, and non-linear editing software to produce our own series of short works. International Cinema: The Art of Ellipsis
In 1936, film critic Roger Leenhardt declared, “cinema is the art of ellipsis.” But this claim seems to contradict our most basic understanding of film. After all, movies are about what we see, not about what we don’t. Or are they? In fact, Leenhardt was suggesting that the richest tradition in cinema explores the dynamic between the seen and the unseen, the shown and the unshown. In this course, we will carefully study four international film classics that effectively exemplify this dynamic in terms of narrative, character, and, most importantly, cinematic style. Films studied will be: Jean Renoir’s Rules of the Game (France, 1939); Yasujiro Ozu’s Late Spring (Japan, 1949); Otto Preminger’s Anatomy of a Murder (US, 1959); and Abbas Kiarostami’s Close-Up (Iran, 1990).

This course, taught in English, surveys the history of movies in China since the 1930s and also offers an in-depth look at the work of: China's fifth-generation directors of the 1980s and their successors up to the present; Taiwan's new wave; and Hong Kong popular cinema, including martial arts film. Our focus is the screening and discussion of films such as The Goddess (a 1934 silent classic), Stage Sisters (1965; directed by the influential Xie Jin), the controversial Yellow Earth (1984), In the Heat of the Sun (a 1994 break with the conventional representation of the Cultural Revolution), Yang Dechang's masterpiece A One and a Two (2000), and Still Life (Jia Zhangke's 2006 meditation on displacement near the Three Gorges Dam). Orpheus, the performer celebrated in life and death, enchanted all creatures, soothed mariners in peril, and defied many norms. Although shaped by constructions of nationhood, modern men and women traverse cultural and linguistic boundaries to enchant in the midst of wars and social strife, often in tandem with the forces of empire and other times against it. In this course you will be introduced to the English East India Company, from the 17th-century until its dissolution in 1858. Much of our focus will be on the Company’s presence in India, and we will pay particular attention to its transformation from a maritime trading company into a territorial colonial state. US Latino Narrative

Reading and Writing the New U.S. Latino Narrative
This course focuses on a new generation of U.S.-Latino authors writing about migration, identity, and otherness. They distinguish themselves from prior generations by publishing primarily in Spanish and by a new sense of ownership of their U.S. environment, which allows them to play with and undermine assumptions commonly associated with their "Latino" identity. In addition to studying these authors, students will produce at least two fiction pieces of their own. Satisfies the IS advanced language requirement in Spanish.
