Mead Memorial Chapel
75 Hepburn Rd.
Middlebury, VT
United States

Mead Chapel is located on the highest point of the campus, its spire symbolizing the aspiration of the College. The light which shines here nightly is seen in the entire valley. Over the portal are carved the words from Psalm 95:4, "The Strength of the Hills is His Also." Mead Memorial Chapel is the center of much activity. The academic year is framed by Convocation in September and Baccalaureate in May. The College-Community Chorus performs here twice a year, while the Chamber Singers sing at official College services. The Chapel also hosts the largest lectures on campus, including recent appearances from Academy Award-winning composer Isaac Hayes, Nobel Laureates Seamus Heaney and Elie Wiesel, and CBS President Andrew Heyward) as well as concerts by a cappella groups and language school choirs.

History

Mead Chapel was the gift of Gov. John A. Mead '64. The Chapel, built in 1916, is a New England meeting house constructed of white marble with a Greek colonnade in front. The carillon was expanded from nine to 48 bells in 1986, thanks to a generous gift from Jane and Allan Dragone '50. The carillon plays regularly and can be heard throughout campus.
