Housing professors from the mathematics, economics, and Spanish departments, Warner Hall consists mainly of offices and classrooms. The Warner Hemicycle is a round extension of the building on the north side and acts as a lecture hall for larger gatherings. Warner also includes the prime number staircase, which grants access to floors 2, 3, and 5 only.

History

Warner Hall was built in 1901, the result of a gift from Ezra J. Warner '1861, as a memorial to his father, once a trustee of the College. Warner was Middlebury's first building consisting only of classrooms, with large well-lighted rooms and a lecture hemicycle. It was completely renovated in 1977.

In 1860 farmers made up over half the population of this country and fed about 30 million people. Today they number 2% of the population and produce more than enough to feed 300 million people. In this course we will look at the history, causes, and results of this incredible transformation. While studying the economic forces behind the changing farming structure, we will examine farm production, resources, technology, and agricultural policy. Game theory is general in scope and has been used to provide theoretical foundations for phenomena in most of the social and behavioral sciences. What kinds of mathematical knowledge are necessary for full participation in contemporary democratic society? How well, and how fairly, do our schools educate students in quantitative skills and reasoning? By what measures might we judge success? We will learn about different approaches to mathematics education in light of these questions. Each student will explore in depth a topic in pure or applied mathematics, under one-on-one supervision by a faculty advisor. The course culminates with a major written paper and presentation. This experience emphasizes independent study, library research, expository writing, and oral presentation. Sociology of Punishment
In this course, we will examine the changing ideologies and practices of state-sponsored punishment that have led to the spectacular expansion of imprisonment and other forms of penal supervision in the U.S. Drawing on theoretical accounts of punishment, historical examinations of prison and parole, and contemporary studies of criminal law and sentencing, we will consider social control as it plays out via institutionalized contexts, namely prisons and asylums, as well as alternative sanctions, such as coerced treatment. We will identify the major phases of penal development and consider mass imprisonment as both a reflection and cause of racial and economic inequality. Advanced Spanish Grammar
This course offers a detailed study of complex aspects of Spanish grammar and syntax. Designed to build upon students' existing knowledge of Spanish grammar, the course will begin with a reconsideration of all the tenses in both the indicative and subjunctive moods, their values and their uses. After briefly reviewing the structure of simple sentences, we will analyze in depth all the different types of dependent clauses. Within the context of sentence structure, we will also look at several key aspects of Spanish grammar (ser and estar, prepositions, the infinitive, and the gerund, among others). Who is Afraid of Poetry?
In this course we will read a selection of poetry by contemporary Spanish and Latin American authors (e.g., Lorca, GarcĂ­a Montero, Rossetti, as well as Eielson, Paz, Pizarnik). The main goal of the discussions will be the understanding of poetry in conjunction with contemporary critical ideas.
