Grants will help pay for work on senior theses during summer 2007

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Rohatyn Center for International Affairs (RCFIA) at Middlebury College recently awarded its International Research Travel Grants for 2007. The grants fund overseas research for students preparing to write senior theses. Students from any discipline or program whose proposed project is international in its orientation are eligible to apply.

The four students who won RCFIA grants for summer 2007 are Sage Bierster ’07, Amanda Goodwin ’07, Talia Lincoln ’08, and Sarah Nelson ’08.

  • Sage Bierster, an international studies major with a focus on Latin America, sociology/anthropology and Portuguese, will investigate the relationship that former "street children" in Rio de Janeiro still have to the street.
  • Amanda Goodwin, a political science major, will conduct research in London to identify voting patterns among ethnic minorities in Britain and determine their driving motivations.
  • Talia Lincoln, a sociology/anthropology major, will research the cultural, social and economic impact of American non-governmental organizations that are providing aid to Thailand.
  • Sarah Nelson, an international studies major with focuses on Africa, religion and French, will investigate the role of Protestant churches in integrating West African immigrants into middle-class communities in Dakar.

An internationally oriented resource and research center, the Rohatyn Center for International Affairs supports Middlebury College’s goal of advancing global understanding that radiates from a core linguistic and cultural competency. RCFIA works with a faculty committee to create co-curricular programming that expands opportunities for students and supports faculty in their teaching and professional development.
