Dear Middlebury Parents,
I write to let you know that the comprehensive fee (room, board, tuition, and student activities fee) for the 2009-2010 academic year will be $50,780, which is 3.2 percent more than last year’s fee.
In recommending this increase to the Board of Trustees, I was mindful of the financial challenges that we face here at the College, and the challenges all of you face during these difficult economic times.
As you may know, earnings from our endowment traditionally underwrite almost a quarter of the cost of every Middlebury student’s education, whether the student is receiving financial aid or not. We will continue to depend on our endowment; however, with endowment earnings severely down this year, a lower comprehensive fee than what we have set would force deeper budget cuts and make it more difficult to protect the core mission of the College.
The most recent edition of Middlebury Magazine provides useful information on how we are dealing with the current economy, as do the materials we have assembled on the College Web site.
Please contact me if you have any questions. I thank you for your support in helping us provide the finest education possible to your sons and daughters.
