In the Thursday, July 15, 1999 edition of the paper, a story ran on the front page, "Despite wish, Vt. parcel 'primeval' no more," regarding Joseph Battell's bequest of 30,000 acres of forest land to the College, the state of Vermont, and the federal government upon his death in 1915.

The focus of the article, which quotes Nan Jenks-Jay, is a newly-launched campaign by the conservation group, Forest Watch, against the United States Forest Service, "charging that the agency has logged the forest for decades and even allowed ... Sugarbush, to build on it, all against the deathbed wishes of Battell," whose will asked that the land remain in a "virgin and primeval state." The College sold most of the tract it was given to the Forest Service in the 1930s and 1950s, preserving the rest. Forest Service officials contend that, "Whatever Battell had in mind for the tract ... was rendered null and void when the land changed hands." This story ran on page A01 of the Boston Globe on 07/15/99.
