The lead story in the "Life at Home" section of June 7's Boston Globe, "It's a beautiful day in his neighborhood," discusses Fred Rogers as he leaves his TV show and focuses on other projects. It also mentions the fact that he received an honorary degree at Middlebury and gave the commencement address.

Burlington Free Press

The Burlington Free Press recently ran two articles about Middlebury students. On Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 an article titled "Logging On" described the professional log-rolling talents of sisters Katie and Elizabeth Hoeschler of Hayward, Wis. This article was the lead story on the front page of the living section and included several photos of the Hoeschlers giving a class in log rolling at the Natatorium. The Free Press also ran a story, "A Show of Strength," in Sunday's (12/16/01) paper on student Katie Samson. This article, which was accompanied by photos of Katie, was the lead story in the sports section and discussed the fact that Katie has been named an Olympic torch bearer--a role she will fulfill next Saturday. The article also described her remarkable personality and her many achievements since a sledding accident in 1999 that left her paralyzed from the chest down. The 11/11/01, Sunday edition of the Burlington Free Press ran a story on the front page of the living section about recently deceased philanthropist Walter Cerf titled "Addison man's legacy is visible throughout Vermont." The article mentioned Middlebury College as one of the organizations that benefited from Cerf's generosity. On the same page, Chris Bohjalian's weekly column focused on the Middle Ground Theater for Addison County children and run by Middlebury College students.

On Thursday, October 18, 2001, a front-page article titled "Classes quench thirst for Mideast History" quotes both Michael Katz and Walid Saleh. Michael comments on the increase in inquiries regarding the Arabic Language School. Chronicle of Higher Education

Middlebury College was mentioned in an article from the 12/17/01 electronic edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education--"New England Colleges Cut Back on Athlete Admissions." Tom R. Gerety, president of Amherst, was quoted as saying that Middlebury College was considering an overall reduction of 10 percent "fewer 'recruited' students -- those for whom athletic prowess is the difference between being admitted and being rejected by the college considering them."

In the April 6 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education in "The Chronicle Review" section, an opinion piece titled "The Greenest Campuses: an Idiosyncratic Guide," describes the administrative support for Middlebury's environmental efforts in the areas of academics and operations, including the environmental studies program, composting, and the pesticide and herbicide-free policies. The article is by Noel Perrin, the same writer whose article about Bicentennial Hall and its "green" features appeared in Vermont Life last year.

Middlebury was in the news this Sunday, 11/11/01, when The New York Times Education Life section ran a story titled "Bein' Green" on page 7 in the "Blackboard" column about the deconstruction of the old science center. The article included a photo of the old science center and also mentioned many of the College's other efforts to use recycled materials in future construction projects. The 11/11/01, Sunday edition of the Rutland Herald ran a story about Bill McKibben that mentioned Middlebury as well. Middlebury College was mentioned in TV Guide's Aug. 25-31 issue. A story on Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" includes a photo of John McCardell giving Fred Rogers his honorary degree at this year's commencement. With 11,807,043 readers, TV Guide has one of the largest--if not the largest--circulation of any magazine in the United States.

Wall Street Journal

Middlebury College is listed as one of the nation's 16 hottest schools in today's Wall Street Journal's Weekend Journal section. The article, which is the lead story in the section and is titled "Colleges for a New Era," continues from the front page of the section to page W10, where a chart lists the 16 schools. The story discusses a new focus, in light of the Sept. 11 attacks, among prospective students and their families on safety, location and cost when considering colleges.

In the "Futures & Options" column, a listing titled "Back to School" offers recommendations about cultural options for college students, and for their families and friends after they "drop Junior off." One of the items listed is the upcoming Grandma Moses exhibit at the Shelburne Museum, which was described as being about 25 miles from Middlebury College.
