John McCardell's announcement that he will step down as president of the College in June 2004 was mentioned Nov. 19 in the A section in an item on page 20.  Director of Public Affairs Phil Benoit was quoted.

John Huddleston was identified as a Middlebury College professor of art in the Sept. 21 edition of The New York Times Book Review, where his book "Killing Ground: Photographs of the Civil War and the Changing American Landscape," was reviewed in the "Books in Brief: Nonfiction" section.

Professor of Political Science Eric Davis was quoted in an article, "Dean Learns Pitfalls of a Popular Hopeful," in the Sept. 12 edition of The New York Times.

A review of an exhibit of Richard Stankiewicz's work in the Friday, August 15, edition of The New York Times, "Giving Life to the Debris of a Mechanized World," identifies Emmie Donadio, who organized the exhibit, as "a Stankiewicz scholar and associate director of the Middlebury College Museum of Art in Vermont." The article appeared on page B28.

On Thursday, August 14, the Circuits section of The New York Times included an article on page E6, "Helping Hands for Homework," that listed the Web address for BreadNet, an online network of writing teachers who attended the Breadloaf School of English. The article was a sidebar to the story "A Young Writers' Roundtable, via the Web."

Eric Davis is quoted in a page-one story in the July 30, 2003 edition of The New York Times. The article, "Defying Labels Left or Right, Dean's '04 Run Makes Gains," describes Howard Dean's campaign and various perceptions of his political philosophy.

In the July 17 edition of New York Times in the Home and Garden section, an article titled "Pressing the Maid's Room Into Service" includes a mention of Middlebury and Tildy La Farge '88, who had a maid's room as her bedroom when she was growing up and found it similar in size to her room as a first-year student at Middlebury.

The New York Times' May 25 edition included a page-one article, "Play to Win, or Just to Play? NCAA's Lowest Rung Split," that quoted John McCardell and mentioned Middlebury.

The New York Times included Middlebury in a story, "Starting College in Fall? For Some It's Old School," in the Sunday, May 11, edition. The story, which quotes Kathy Lindsey of admissions and Feb senior Heather Collamore, discusses the pros and cons of beginning college in the spring rather than the fall.

Middlebury College was mentioned in the Sports section of The New York Times on Sunday, April 20, in an article titled "Among Runners, Elite Girls Face Burnout and Injury." The story quotes Amber Trotter '06, who won the national high school cross-country title in 2001, about why she chose to go to Middlebury, a Division III school, rather than one of the Division I universities.

Middlebury College was mentioned in The New York Times on Sunday, April 13, in a story in the Business section about a charity basketball game in which Ted Virtue '82 played.

On Saturday, April 12, The Times ran an article titled "Critic's Books Go to Small College" about Harold Bloom's decision to donate his papers to St. Michael's College. Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English was mentioned as a place where Bloom has taught.

The College distributed an economic impact study that measures the economic effects of the College on the Town of Middlebury and Addison County. The Burlington Free Press published two articles on April 3 about the study on its Money page, "Small college makes big impact" and "School's presence boosts businesses." Two photos were included in the article.

The March 20 New York Times included an article titled "Making a Statement, in Absentia: In Instant-Messaging Circles It's Not Whether You're There, but How You Say You're Not." The story was on the front page of the "Circuits" section and began by focusing on Emily Loesche '05, who is a frequent user of away messages. A color photo of Emily and three of her friends in her dorm room accompanied the first section of the article. Emily was quoted again later in the article.

Middlebury was mentioned in a weekly Web-exclusive column, "Dispatches," in the February 25 edition of The New York Times. Titled "NATO: The Inside Story," the article quotes Stan Sloan and identifies him as "a NATO expert and visiting scholar at Middlebury College."

Middlebury College, and college admissions policies regarding legacies, were the topics of an article in the New York Times on February 13. The article appeared in the National section on page A20 and included photos of Katie Franklin '06 and Mike Schoenfeld, dean of enrollment planning.

Middlebury College was mentioned in an article in The New York Times' Education Life section on Sunday, Jan. 12. The article, "So Nice, You Apply Twice," discusses the trend amongst colleges to establish a pre-application date in December for regular admission candidates. John Hanson is quoted several times.
