In the Dec. 17 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, the "Short Subjects" column includes a feature titled "No Parking? No Problem" that describes how two Middlebury College employees, Manager of Investments Derek Hammel and Nordic Ski School Director Tim Reilly, commute to work on snowy winter days--Derek snowshoes and Tim cross-country skis.  The article is accompanied by a photo of each of them.

The Nov. 26 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education included a cover article by Professor of English Jay Parini in "The Chronicle Review" titled "William Faulkner: 'Not an Educated Man.'"  Jay's book, "One Matchless Time: A Life of William Faulkner" was recently published by HarperCollins. 

On page A24 of the Nov. 12 issue of The Chronicle, an ad includes pictures of the 39 recipients of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Fellowships, which are given, according to the foundation, "to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education."  Samia Amin '03, from Pakistan and now at Harvard, is the only recipient from a NESCAC institution.  The Scholarships are worth up to $50,000 a year for up to six years, and recipients must first be nominated by faculty.

The Oct. 21 daily edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education quoted Middlebury Magazine Editor Matt Jennings about an article he wrote for the October issue of Currents magazine.  The Currents article, "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate," which was about college rankings, quotes Vice President of College Advancement Michael Schoenfeld.

The July 23 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education included an essay by Professor of English Jay Parini titled "The Well-Tempered Seminar."  The text is available at http://chronicle.com/free/v50/i46/46b01601.htm.
