Kateri Carmola is an assistant professor of
political science at Middlebury College. She joined the faculty in 2001 and teaches courses on warfare, human rights, and political philosophy.

Her primary research includes the growing use of private security contractors worldwide, and the ethics and laws of war, especially in current conflicts.

Carmola received a grant to support work on her book, "Global Warriors: Private Security Contractors and the Ambiguities of National Strategy." She has written articles on the use of proxy forces in Afghanistan and the changing idea of "proportionality" in warfare. In 2004, she helped organize and participated in a conference on private security, sponsored jointly by Middlebury College and Princeton University. The conference brought together security company executives, lobbyists, government officials, and academics to discuss the issue.

Carmola's book, "Private Security Contractors in the Age of New Wars: Risk, Law & Ethics," will be published in July 2008 by Routledge Press.
