Regularly scheduled classes are not held between the hours of 4:15 and 7:30 p.m. Evening classes are permitted on Monday and Tuesday. Athletic practices do not begin before 4:15 p.m., and home athletic contests on weekdays are normally not played before 3:00.

Any extra class meetings you need to hold, such as review sessions or evening exams, must be scheduled through the scheduling office to avoid conflicts with other classes or events. Such extra meetings can be scheduled on some, but not all, weekday evenings. Consult the scheduling guidelines or contact Jennifer Nuceder (ext. 5961).

The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure flexibility in scheduling for students, and to reduce scheduling conflicts that prevent students from registering for courses in which they would like to enroll.

EVENING CLASSES

3-hour classes may be scheduled from 7:30 – 10:25 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.  75-minute classes may be scheduled from 7:30 – 8:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Screenings may be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings.  Evening classes on other nights must be approved by the dean of the faculty or designate. Athletic contests will not be scheduled on Monday evenings.

EXAMINATIONS OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME

Mid-term examinations given outside of class should be scheduled on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. or Friday at 2:30 p.m. whenever possible.  Faculty scheduling mid-terms on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday evenings must offer alternate examination times to students who have regularly scheduled classes or screenings on one of those evenings.

OTHER SCHEDULING GUIDELINES

Departments must schedule their courses so that no more than approximately 50 per cent of lecture sections are offered during the "prime time hours": Mon-Wed at 9:05, 10:10, and 11:15; and Tu-Th at 9:30 and 11:00.

Departments are prohibited from scheduling discussion sections during the "prime time hours."  Discussion sections should be scheduled at 8:00 am, on Fridays, in the afternoons, or at 7:30 p.m. on evenings on which classes are held.  Language drills and 4th hours may be scheduled during the "prime time hours."

Departments must offer 1 out of 11 of their courses in the 8:00 am Mon-Wed-Fri and 8:00 am Tu-Th time blocks (no change from current policy).  Departments that offer multiple-section courses with an enrollment of primarily first-year students are encouraged to schedule at least one of the sections at 8:00 am.

In order to reduce conflicts with afternoon laboratories and discussion sections, departments are encouraged to schedule high-enrollment 100-level lecture courses in the mornings.

The 12:30 – 1:20 hour may be used as follows:

  1. For Mon-Wed-Fri classes in courses in which there are at least two distinct lecture sections offered in the same semester
  2. For discussion sections, drills, or 4th hours.

50-minute and 75-minute classes may not be scheduled in ways that cut across two standard time blocks.  In particular, the 8:40 – 9:55 Mon-Wed schedule will not be permitted.  The 12:15 – 1:30 Mon-Wed schedule is being offered as an alternative to the 8:40 – 9:55 period.  Each department may offer one 12:15-1:30 class each semester.

Classes that meet five days a week must be scheduled so that they fully utilize two of the standard time blocks, rather than spreading across three time blocks.

Courses with two or more distinct lecture sections offered in the same semester must be scheduled so that all lecture sections meet at different times.

The Scheduling Office, in collaboration with the Office of the Associate Deans of the Faculty, will be responsible for reviewing departments' proposed course schedules and bringing to the attention of department chairs departures from the guidelines.  The Associate Deans of the Faculty will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the guidelines.  Departments may be exempted from guidelines when justified for pedagogical reasons: e.g., a department whose members teach regularly in the evening may be exempted from the 8:00 am requirement, or a department whose members regularly teach laboratories on most afternoons of the week may be exempted from the cap of 50% on "prime time" courses.
