Funds for Faculty Research and Travel
The College is committed to improving faculty teaching and to encouraging faculty research.
To find out about the different types of development funding available, see the Support for Faculty Research and Development pages, including a .pdf page with a brief description of each, for which you can click here.
In particular, the college supports initiatives in teaching and research through the Faculty Professional Development Fund (FPDF). Funding can be sought for attendance at professional meetings, research assistants, research materials, membership fees to professional organizations, and other initiatives. The fund does not support dissertation research. Requests for funds should be submitted to the office of the Dean for Faculty Development and Research. Please use the application form on the web.
The deadline for applications is a minimum of 2 months before your travel date or project start date, with a final cut-off date of early February. A detailed memo on FPDF will be sent to all faculty. If the Dean for Faculty Development and Research has approved your request, you can either request funds before your trip or ask for reimbursement after it. Your department coordinator can explain the procedure.
The faculty development program includes a regular leave program, the details of which can be found in the Middlebury College Handbook. Leaves are not funded for completion of dissertations, nor can a leave be taken without pay for this purpose. To receive the maximum level of funding from the College, faculty are expected to apply for outside support. Franci Farnsworth in the Grants Office is available to help faculty identify funding sources. Funds are available through the Dean of the Faculty's office for moving allotments for those faculty whose leaves take them out of Middlebury for an extended period.
