Retirement Planning

If you are considering retirement, please contact the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at 443.5735 to discuss your options as soon as possible. The VP can discuss plans for a phased retirement by moving to Associate Status, or retirement from full-time service.  The "Phased Retirement Policy" is available on the HR website within the Summary Plan Description. You may also want to review Handbook language on Associate Status.

As a member of the TIAA-CREF retirement plan you are encouraged to meet with a representative once per year, and especially prior to making the decision to retire.  Our representative, Erik Moreau, is on campus regularly.  His direct number is 866-904-7801 x275142.  Information about our retirement plan, link to the TIAA-CREF website and the phone number to call to schedule an appointment with Erik are available on the Human Resources website

Once you have decided to retire, you will also need to meet with Human Resources.  Contact Franklin Daniel at 443.5755, or fdaniel@middlebury.edu.  He will be happy to meet with you and assist in your planning.

About six months prior to retirement, we ask that you meet with the Dean for Faculty Development and Research to discuss services available to you as an emeritus/a. Someone from the DFDR office will be in touch to set up a meeting.

Once faculty have retired from active service, we encourage them to remain connected to the academic community.

The designation "emeritus" or "emerita" is awarded by the President and Board to retired faculty who have met certain criteria.  As an emeritus/emerita, the College offers some amenities and provides a small amount of research support.  The policy can be found here.

A list of those faculty with emeritus status can be found here.
