Middlebury College Bread Loaf School of English

The Program

Students may attend Bread Loaf for one or more summers and take courses in continuing graduate education, or they may enroll in full degree programs, leading to the Master of Arts and Master of Letters degrees in English.

The normal summer program of study consists of two courses (one unit each) in New Mexico, North Carolina, and Vermont, and one course (two units) at Oxford.

Bread Loaf degrees are usually earned in four or five summers. Students may transfer up to two units of credit from another institution and they may undertake up to two Independent Reading Projects.

After the first summer exceptional students may, with the director's permission, take a third course for credit in New Mexico, North Carolina, or Vermont or an additional tutorial (one unit of credit) at Oxford.

Bread Loaf Credits

Each one-unit course at Bread Loaf receives three semester hours (the equivalent of four and one-half quarter hours) of graduate credit. All of the courses offered at the New Mexico, North Carolina, and Vermont campuses are one-unit courses, and each course meets five hours a week. The regular two-unit Oxford courses receive six semester hours of graduate credit.

In order to be used for a Bread Loaf M.A. or M.Litt., all credits must have been earned within 10 years of a student's initial enrollment at Bread Loaf, and a grade of B- or better is required in order to receive course credit.
