The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference of Middlebury College is pleased to announce the winners of the 2002 seventh annual Bakeless Literary Publication Prizes. Jennifer Grotz's Cusp was chosen by Yusef Kkomunyakaa for the Poetry prize. Sara Pritchard's Crackpots was chosen by Ursula Hegi for the Fiction prize. There was no prize winner in Creative Nonfiction this year. The two winning authors will have their book length manuscripts published by Houghton Mifflin, in its distinguished Mariner Original Paperback line. In addition, they will receive fellowships to attend the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in August, 2003.

2002 Bakeless Poetry Prize

Jennifer Grotz's poems have appeared in Tri-Quarterly, Ploughshares, Black Warrior Riview, New England Review, Best American Poetry 2000, and elsewhere. She is currently pursuing the PhD in literature and creative writing at the University of Houston. Whe received her MFA in poetry and MA in english at Indiana University in 1996, and completed her BA at Tulane University in 1993. She has received grants and scholarships from the Oregon Arts Commission, Literary Arts Inc., the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and the National Society of Arts and Letters. She is also the author of Not Body, a limited edition letterpress chapbook, published in 2001 by Urban Editions.

2002 Bakeless Fiction Prize

Sara Pritchard is a student in the MFA program in creative writing at West Virginia University. She has a completed her BA at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. Under the pseudonym Delta B. Horne, Sara's stories and essays have been published in Northwest Review, Arts & Letters, Bellingham Review, and elsewhere. She lives in Morgantown, WV, and is the publications coordinator for Canaan Valley Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Thomas, WV.
