Middlebury receives many more applications from qualified students than can be admitted. Thus, admission to Middlebury must be selective and is based upon academic ability and achievement, community citizenship, leadership, character, and other personal qualities. The program and record of each applicant will be assessed on an individual basis. A suggested secondary school program would include the following, generally at the honors or advanced level:
1. Four years of English
2. Four years of one foreign language (in preference to two
years each of two languages)
3. Four years of mathematics and/or computer science
4. Three or more years of laboratory science
5. Three or more years of history
6. Some study of music, art, or drama
Many candidates whose programs of study differ from that outlined above are admitted each year; it is the overall quality of an applicant's secondary school achievement that is of primary importance.
Middlebury College's revised testing policy reflects the recent changes to the SAT I made by the College Board. Students who plan to reapply to Middlebury College by reactivating a previous application must fulfill the College's new testing requirements. Applicants must submit standardized tests in at least three different areas of study. Beginning with applicants graduating from secondary school in 2006, this requirement may be met by any one of the following three options:
1. The ACT (either with or without the Writing Test)
2. The New (three-part) SAT I
3. Three tests in different subject areas chosen from the
SAT II
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Middlebury will consider either the TOEFL or the results from other standardized assessments, including: SAT I, IELTS, CPE, MELAB, and ELPT. Predicted grades in IBA1 or A2 English or in A-level English will also be considered. No minimum or "cut-off" scores are used.
Typically, the average TOEFL for an entering class is 631 on the written test and 274 on the computer test.
The majority of students admitted to Middlebury present outstanding records: At least 80 percent of students in incoming classes have graduated in the top 10 percent of their secondary school class and 90 percent in the top fifth. Applications are welcomed from students whose rank is not in this range if they believe they have a particular contribution to make to the student body.

February Admission Program
Approximately 90 students are offered spring term admission to fill vacancies created by students who graduate at midyear and by those who study abroad. These "Febs" are selected from the regular applicant pool and are notified of admission at the same time as students admitted for September. Orientation, meetings with faculty advisers, and registration are scheduled for the first week in February. Spring semester classes normally begin during the second week in February. For more information about February admission, visit www.middlebury.edu/admissions/applying/feb
Transfer Students
Middlebury accepts a very limited number of students into the sophomore and junior classes. Credits earned are transferable at the discretion of Middlebury College. Transfer students are eligible to apply for and receive financial aid.
Credit for Advanced Placement and International
Baccalaureate Courses
Students wishing to receive college credit for work done while in secondary school may do so through the Advanced Placement Program sponsored by the College Board or by successful completion of an International Baccalaureate program.
Advanced placement scores of 4 or 5 are often awarded credit by Middlebury College. Students who have completed the full IB Diploma with a total of 36 points or more, including three higher-level grades of 6 or 7, are eligible to apply for sophomore standing at Middlebury. Students having fewer than 36 points, or fewer than three scores of 6 or higher, may receive the equivalent of two course credits for each higher-level examination passed with a score of 6 or 7. No credit is awarded for standard level exams.
Although college-level courses taken as part of a secondary school program are not normally accepted for transfer, a student taking college-level courses that do not receive secondary school credit may apply for transfer credit.
