Karl Krusell earned his B.A. in Classical Studies from Middlebury College in 2011. While at Middlebury, he was inadvertently drawn to the study of shipwrecks while taking a SCUBA course to fulfill a physical education requirement. After completing graduate coursework in the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University, he moved to Providence, Rhode Island to pursue a Ph.D. at the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.
Karl has participated in archaeological fieldwork in Greece and Turkey, where he also occasionally collaborates with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. He has taught courses on ancient Greek, Latin, cultural anthropology, and various archaeological topics. His primary research interest and area of specialization is ancient seafaring. He is currently finishing his dissertation on the cross-cultural phenomenon of attributing animacy and personhood to ships and boats.

Readings in major authors. Students should have had some formal study of Latin and should consult with the instructor during the first week of classes to determine whether or not the class is at the appropriate level. 3 hrs. lect.
