Middlebury College Language Schools and Schools Abroad

The study of a language at the graduate level with Middlebury College encompasses more than simply oral and written expression and includes the cultural dimensions that can come only from truly “living the language.” Students can pursue M.A. degrees in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish. The variety of paths that one can take to earning an M.A. degree through the Language Schools is a testament to the innovative approach employed by Middlebury College. One can earn an M.A. in four summers at our campus in Vermont or elect the unique path of earning an M.A. in a single year by spending the summer in Vermont followed by the academic year at one of our Schools Abroad. [The Chinese and Russian M.A. requires students to spend a second summer on the Vermont campus following the academic year.]

The Doctor of Modern Languages (D.M.L.) program, unique to Middlebury, provides an alternative to the Ph.D. that retains the traditional focus on depth in research while meeting the special needs of language teachers and administrators for competence in areas of language pedagogy and cultural studies.
