This course is intended for students with no or minimum previous experience of the French language. We will develop the four competencies (listening and writing comprehension and expression) with extra emphasis put on oral communication. We will work with two different kinds of support: a method, Reflets, as well as realia. The entire class will also revolve around a creative oral and writing project in response to the needs of students.

Level Two is an integrated, intensive program for students who have received some previous instruction in (or exposure to) French, but who have reached only minimal proficiency and are not yet able to function independently in full immersion.
Level Two focuses on:
* Developing listening comprehension, oral competence, and socio-cultural communicative proficiency;
* Systematic acquisition of strategies for oral and written expression through progressive practice, with topical review of basic morphological and syntactic structures;
* An overview of various cultural aspects of French-speaking communities worldwide, through readings and multimedia resources.
The course is divided into 3 units. Students will be taught 4 classes a day:
Vocabulary and civilization (3211);
Introduction to literature (3212);
Oral activities (3213);
Grammar.
For this course students will be asked to:
- do presentations using Powerpoint,
- film presentations using their personal digital cameras and/or mobiles (if they have one),
- memorize poems and short texts for the literature class.
Texts: This course makes extensive use of authentic materials: literary excerpts, magazine and news articles, comic strips, songs, film clips and web sites.

Level III: Upper Intermediate 3305-3306-3307-3308

Level Three is for students who have had significant previous instruction in French and who are already able to function independently in full immersion. Typically, students at this level demonstrate textual/writing ability beyond the sentence level. The individual components of the program are designed to complement one another, and all include intensive study of the language. Students will also arrive at a broader appreciation of French and Francophone cultures and literatures. N.B. All four courses are required.
The four course segments share the following common objectives:
* Develop aural/oral proficiency through use of video and audio-based media, theater, movies, songs, and TV programs. Students will be invited to express themselves in real-life conversations and through drama activities. Emphasis will be placed on pronunciation, intonation and sentence rhythm; * Integrate the characteristics of non-verbal language into communication in French (gesture, posture, facial expression, voice inflection, etc.);
* Review selected grammatical structures in close coordination with topics and activities taught in class;
* Provide a broad introduction to French and Francophone culture and literature through the study of articles from the press, plays, short stories, poems, and excerpts from novels.

3305 La Dramaturgie : les mécanismes fondamentaux du récit dramatique / Dramaturgy: fundamental mechanisms of the dramatic narration

This course aims at developing ease, fluidity, and efficiency in oral expression through the medium of theater. It will focus on the rules and mechanisms to build and write a play through Francophone contemporary theater: the character, his goal, the obstacles, the conflict, the climax, the cliffhanger, the milking, the topper, etc. With the support of different plays (print or DVD) of Koltès, Mouawad, Pliya, we will try to explore, by theory and practice, the Francophone theater today. 3306 Voyage dans l’écriture/Journey in Writing
Instructor: Laurent Patenotte
This French composition course features a creative approach to process writing. Learners, in groups of two or three, select a genre, a mini-novel, skits or epistolary novel, and construct a story with embedded grammatical, rhetorical, and stylistic constraints. User-friendly instructive tools intended to stimulate creativity and facilitate language accuracy are readily available on the instructor's website. There, learners have access to a panoply of descriptive and narrative excerpts featuring various genres, moods, and registers. They also find pedagogically relevant reference works such as lexical and semantic webs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, grammatical descriptions, and literary, historical and Francophone civilization links. This carefully orchestrated course is a natural environment for 'scaffolding' and 'noticing' the gap between the language they experience from the various sources of input and their own output. It also aims at targeting 'avoidance' and 'overuse' strategies that often immobilize learners' language development and creativity.

3307 A travers cinéma, chansons et littérature / Through Cinema, Songs, and Literature

Through the examination and use of authentic French materials, the course will discuss current topics in French society and focus on oral language (pronunciation, communication, etc.). Aural and visual materials will include feature-length films, songs, and literary texts (poetry, drama, and short story). Films: On connaît la chanson, Les choristes. (1 unit)

3308 Introduction au(x) monde(s) francophone(s) / Introduction to Francophone World(s)

In this course students will discover the peoples and cultures of various Francophone regions, such as Quebec, Morocco, French Guyana, Lebanon, and the Antilles, through a variety of documents that will demonstrate the range and diversity of Francophone cultures: short stories, plays, songs, recipes, etc. Authors to be considered include Milan Kundera, Michel Tremblay, Jacques Roumain, Copi, Ferdinand Oyono, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Jacques Rabemananjara, Kim Lefèvre, Salah Stétié et Dewé Gorodé.
Students will also continue to perfect their oral and written competence in French through individual and group presentations. (1 unit)

This course enables students to construct progressively a repertoire of textual forms (narrative, descriptive, expressive, and argumentative) in order to communicate flexibly and fluently in writing. Concurrently, students will review fundamental grammatical structures and principles through numerous and varied exercises. This class includes a daily plenary session (1 hour) and is complemented by a voluntary writing workshop.

3450 Langue orale et théâtre / Theater and Language
Instructor: Anne-Marie White & Mylène Roy
This course aims at developing ease, fluidity, and efficiency in oral expression through the medium of theater. By interpreting characters in short contemporary plays, students work both on phonetic and intonative accuracy and on their body language. All those who engage in public speaking (teachers especially) will find dramatic training invaluable in improving the quality of their voice, of their posture, and generally in making them feel more comfortable when addressing an audience. Daily work includes vocal, breathing, and other exercises in addition to rehearsing scenes that will be performed in a public show toward the end of the summer session.
3414 Lectures interprétatives à haute voix / Oral Interpretation of Texts

In all literatures and in French Literature in particular, many texts can be compared to musical scores, and become alive when read orally. Preparatory warm up activities will help us reflect on the "music" that one can put on words. We will learn how to interpret orally texts chosen from a small anthology ranging from the Middle Ages to today's literature. Some of these will be presented in a public performance during the summer.

3455 Du texte, au théâtre, au film / From Text to Theatre to Film
Instructor: Jean Verrier
Theater, said Molière, is made to be played. But it is an ephemeral art and until recently only traces of texts and written eye witness accounts survived. However the way that societies have interpreted and staged these texts reveals the essence of those societies. More recently cinema allowed the capture on film of some of these interpretations and stagings, but in the absence of a live audience. The personal point of view of each spectator is replaced by the mechanical eyes of two or three fixed cameras. This is not theater, this is filmed theater, and it ages quickly. However it seems that a new "genre" has emerged in recent decades, of which the last movie directed in 1994 by the French film maker Louis Malle, Vania 42ème rue, and based on the text of the early 20th Century Russian author Chekhov, might be emblematic. Interpreted by contemporary New York actors, we cross languages, cultures and media. More precisely it is the television, extended by the DVD, that is the main media of this new genre. Going from the movie to the text, it is an easy access to a new language and culture. This is what we will do by viewing several filmed French plays of Molière, Corneille, Marivaux, H. Cixous, J.-M. Koltès, N.Sarraute, V. Novarina... Extracts will be studied in class to reflect on how different media can change meanings. Students will be invited to compare their interpretations, to develop analysis grids and to write reviews for the Gazette.

3412 Les grands discours de l’éloquence politique française / The Great Speeches of French Political Rhetoric
Instructor: Nicolas Roussellier
This course will study a variety of modern political speeches from the French Revolution to today. It offers a panorama of the evolution of French political rhetoric according to its historical, political, intellectual, and religious context. Students will have the opportunity to become familiar with political literature and will work on the art of rhetoric and political discourse in a concrete and lively manner, notably through enrichment of vocabulary, knowledge of the diversity of language styles, analysis of argumentation, and discursive strategies. Students of this course will have the opportunity to write by themselves a political speech which will be performed in a special event, the Soirée de l’Éloquence politique, held at the end of the summer session in the Warner Hemicyle.

3429 Le cinéma du Maghreb et de l’immigration / Cinemas of the Maghreb and Immigration

N.B. This course will be offered from June 30 to July 22, 2 hours a day.
This course will study the historical and cultural aspects of the Maghreb and immigration though cinema. It will explore the double image that characterizes this type of cinema. The first image will focus on the French vision of the Maghreb and its representation in France’s former colonies. The second image will focus on Maghrebian directors and their vision of their societies. We will also explore the integration in France of the second generation of immigrants (the "Beurs"), especially issues of citizenship, exile, etc. Examples will be taken from films such as: Julien Duvivier’s "Pépé le Moko", Gillo Pontecorvo ‘s "La Bataille d'Alger", M. Allouache ‘s "Omar", C. Ruggia ‘s "Le Gone du Chaaba", Y. Benguigui ‘s "Inchallah dimanche" and A. Kechiche’s "La Graine et le mulet", among others.

3485 Les formes de politisation de la jeunesse /Young people and politics in France today : continuity and change

N.B. This course will be offered from July 23 to August 14, 2 hours a day.
Youth is an intensive period of transaction during which individuals, in different ways, will enter adulthood and discover politics. Young people have to negotiate with their primary socialization, and especially with their family legacy, to make their own choices and to appropriate specific attitudes, behaviour and roles in this field. First of all, this course will give the opportunity to better understand this process and to study political identity during this period of life. Are young people in politics so different from their elders? Can we observe some generational characteristics? Are all young people politically similar? This course will also explore the different forms of politicization among the young. Are they interested? Do they vote and how do they vote? Are they engaged and how are they engaged? Lastly, working with different data, surveys and studies, this course will offer an overview of French political life today.

6520 Introduction au monde francophone / Introduction to the Francophone World
Instructor: Romuald Fonkoua
This course introduces a major theme in French studies, whose understanding has become absolutely indispensable—for French teachers especially—in its many aspects: history, society, culture, language. Coursework will therefore combine a study of the French-speaking regions, of ways of expressing identity through the French language, and of language meeting culture, with an analysis of transnational Francophone strategies for development and solidarity.

6589 Introduction à la littérature maghrébine de langue française / Introduction to Maghrebian Francophone Literature
Instructor: Bachir Adjil
This course studies the history of French-language Maghrebian literature through works from the colonial and post-colonial periods by prominent authors and within main currents such as the “Algerian novel.” Beginning in the Fifties, this genre has distinguished itself by its literary qualities and discursive ambitions, a critical affirmation aiming to decipher social phenomena and denounce traditionalist practices. In the Seventies, a new generation of novelists came into its own in the three countries of French-speaking North Africa, searching for renewal of the genre (Rachid Boudjedra, Tahar BenJelloun, Mohammed Khaireddine), while the French language became, in the Eighties, a space where permissiveness could thrive (Tahar Djaout, Rachid Mimouni, Boualem Sansal, Assia Djebar). Lastly, we will examine the latest frontiers of this field, the detective novel (Yasmina Khadra) and migrant literature.

6640 Histoire de France—de l’échelle métropolitaine à l’échelle-monde / History of France—From the Metropolitan to the Global Level

This course offers students a condensed panorama of the principal changes marking the history of France since the Age of Enlightenment. France will be studied from the perspectives of the metropolis and its external relationships and actions (colonies, migrations, exiles, etc.). Two topics receiving particular attention will be the creation of the nation-state confronted with the instability of political regimes, and social, religious, and cultural identities, from the search for unity to recognition of minorities.

1. French Literature of World War II /La littérature de la deuxième guerre mondiale

Ce cours examinera la littérature de la deuxième guerre mondiale, écrite pendant la guerre (Vercors, Némirovskly), dans l'immédiat après-guerre (Sartre dans Situations III et Camus), et dans les périodes qui ont suivi (Duras, Modiano). Le problème historiographique du mythe de Vichy et ses suites sera analysé à partir de documents historiques (Rousso), critiques (comme Susan Suleiman sur l'Affaire Aubrac), et de films, à commencer par Le Chagrin et la pitié. Ce cours est donc de par son sujet pluridisciplinaire mais tout de même bien ancré dans la littérature. Nous étudierons donc l'influence réciproque et constante de la littérature et l'histoire dans ce domaine.
2. Literature and Photography / Littérature et photographie

L’enjeu de ce cours sera d’amener les étudiants à réfléchir aux relations entre littérature et photographie, aux différents modes de ces relations, à leurs potentialités et aux œuvres qu’elles ont pu produire. On passera donc tout aussi bien par des textes de Baudelaire sur la photographie que par des textes de Walter Benjamin ou de Roland Barthes, du côté de la pensée de la photographie comme art. On passera encore par des textes et des œuvres de théoriciens et de praticiens de la photographie en tant qu’ils éclairent certains modes de tension entre texte et image (de Moholy-Nagy à Duane Michals en passant par Ralph Eugene Meatyard ou Denis Roche). Et l’on passera enfin par des textes d’écrivains (de Blaise Cendrars à Jacques Roubaud ou d’André Breton ou W.C. Sebald) et par des livres nés de la rencontre entre texte et image photographique (James Agee et Walker Evans, Nezval et Teige, Eluard et Man Ray). Ce cours, pensé selon une démarche délibérément pluridisciplinaire et transdisciplinaire, entend constituer un parcours, subjectif, ouvert à différentes esthétiques, un parcours de découverte de ce siècle et demi de rapports complexes, conflictuels et créatifs, entre littérature et photographie.

3. Cinema and society : France in the 60’s and 70’s / Cinéma et Société: La France des années soixante et soixante-dix

Après 1955, une réaction contre les conventions traditionnelles du cinéma apparaît un peu partout dans le monde, mais elle prend une tournure particulièrement remarquable en France, préparant – sous l’influence notable du néoréalisme italien – une transformation essentielle des ambitions et des moyens du « septième art », laquelle accompagne de profondes mutations de la société contemporaine. Aller à la rencontre du monde tel qu’il est, tel est bien l’un des principaux enjeux de la modernité cinématographique, dont les œuvres s’inscrivent fondamentalement dans un procès historique en développant une logique « révolutionnaire », tant au niveau esthétique qu’au niveau idéologique.
Le cours abordera le cinéma à travers le prisme des principaux événements qui ont déterminé l’évolution de la société française et, inversement, il invitera à penser l’Histoire récente du pays à la lumière du cinéma, dans une perspective mêlant l’analyse filmique, l’histoire des idées et la sociologie. Les sujets abordés couvriront le champ le plus large possible dont : la banlieue et l’espace urbain, la décolonisation, l’immigration et ses représentations, l’influence de la culture américaine sur la société française, la crise des identités sociales , les manipulations politiques, les conditions de travail, etc…

5. Teaching French Grammar in a FSL course / Didactique de la grammaire: comment enseigner la grammaire dans un cours de FLS.

Ce cours permettra de réfléchir sur la didactique de la grammaire et de l'orthographe en FLE. Trois grands points seront abordés : l'orthographe (comment rénover la dictée ; les finales et leurs dangers ; quelles règles pour les accents), les verbes (comment présenter les formes ; comment présenter les emplois dans les différents modes ; comment s'y retrouver dans les phrases avec "SI"), et les déterminants (comment les décrire ; le cas des partitifs et des définis contractés ; les perturbations créées par ‘de’).
La dernière semaine pourra être réservée à différents autres points choisis en commun au début du cours. A chaque fois, il s'agira de faire la liste des erreurs les plus fréquentes chez les apprenants de tous niveaux, de faire une analyse critique des descriptions et des exercices trouvés dans les manuels et de fabriquer ensemble des outils pour la classe. L'accent sera mis sur la valeur communicative de la langue.

This course is designed for those who need to improve the quality of their written French. Its goal is to familiarize students with major textual types (descriptive, narrative, and argumentative) and provide them with the conceptual and practical tools to produce their own texts. A review of the main grammatical difficulties involved in textual production will be complemented by practical and progressive exercises on constructing texts: crafting an outline, ensuring coherence, using transitions and connectors, etc. N.B. Initially, first-year graduate students will be placed in this course on the basis of their scores on the grammar/comprehension test and on the placement essay; although any remaining seats will be opened to other interested students, they should normally register in 6510.

6514 Production orale et prononciation / Oral Production and Pronunciation

In this course, students will develop and perfect their oral production skills, by means of various original materials and through a wide array of challenging oral production activities. By working on the linguistic and socio-cultural dimensions of a variety of useful communicative speech situations, students will acquire and consolidate a more sophisticated and lasting proficiency in oral expression. Each class will include systematic work on pronunciation, carefully integrated into the program of the day or the week; practice and correction of French pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation through a wide array of oral exercises (discrimination, repetition, dialogues, in-situation activities...). In all aspects of the course, improving communicative ability will be the priority. A mid-session individual interview will allow students to measure their progress and receive customized suggestions to maximize their oral performance.

6524 Introduction à la linguistique / An Introduction to Linguistics

This course is meant to be a first contact with the principles and methods of linguistic analysis. Including an introduction to linguistics, the course is designed for people who are beginning their French linguistic studies as well as for advanced-level students willing to increase and systematize their knowledge by means of a structured reflection on certain fundamental concepts of general linguistics. An introduction to a complex discipline can be dealt with by different approaches. The goal of this course is to demonstrate how the French of Quebec constitutes not only the language of art and literature but an integral part of Quebecers’ identity. By reading and discussing critical essays and diverse forms of literature such as folktales and legends, songs and novels, students will be exposed to the linguistic particularities of Quebec French, known as québécismes. They will also understand how the language evolved throughout its history in a North America environment. In the 1960’s, literature proved to be the perfect setting for this creative and original form of French language in both the cultural and political arenas of Quebec. Since this decade, several of these significant Quebecois texts, which will be discussed in this course, have transcended the borders of Quebec where they have enriched francophone literature globally.

This course aims at developing ease, fluidity, and efficiency in oral expression through the medium of theater. By interpreting characters in short contemporary plays, students work both on phonetic and intonative accuracy and on their body language. All those who engage in public speaking (teachers especially) will find dramatic training invaluable in improving the quality of their voice, of their posture, and generally in making them feel more
comfortable when addressing an audience. Daily work includes vocal, breathing, and other exercises in addition to rehearsing a short play that will be performed in a public show toward the end of the summer session.

This course studies the history of French-language Maghrebian literature through works from the colonial and post-colonial periods by prominent authors and within main currents such as the "Algerian novel." Beginning in the Fifties, this genre has distinguished itself by its literary qualities and discursive ambitions, a critical affirmation aiming to decipher social phenomena and denounce traditionalist practices. In the Seventies, a new generation of novelists came into its own in the three countries of French-speaking North Africa, searching for renewal of the genre (Rachid Boudjedra, Tahar BenJelloun, Mohammed Khaireddine), while the French language became, in the Eighties, a space where permissiveness could thrive (Tahar Djaout, Rachid Mimouni, Boualem Sansal, Assia Djebar). Lastly, we will examine the latest frontiers of this field, the detective novel (Yasmina Khadra) and migrant literature.

Numerous students enrolled in Master’s programs or preparing for the D.M.L. degree have in the past criticized the absence of courses teaching the critical methods for analyzing literary texts. This chiefly practical course attempts to remedy the situation by presenting an overview of the existing major currents. Twenty years after the success of "new criticism," the partisan passions, excesses, intellectual terrorism, and exaggerated use of jargon seem to have subsided and it is now possible to study the different approaches from a more lucid and calmer perspective. Thanks to Antoine Compagnon, we now have an invaluable text to stimulate our reflection: his Démon de la Théorie (Le Seuil, 1998) will serve as our guide throughout the course. With this work, we will address the fundamental notions of literary theory: the specificity of literature; issues of author, reader, and style; the relationships of the text to the world; anchorage in history; the issue of literary value, etc. A study of Germinal of Emile Zola will help us illustrate throughout the course all these essential concepts of literary theory. Conducted in a discussion and dialogue format, this presentation of critical methods will quickly reveal that knowledge and the love of literature are inseparable.

Through close readings, this course will establish the links between the fact they were "strangers," the ever present theme of "the strange" in their plays, and their constant questioning of language as a tool on their ontological quest.

This course, addressed to advanced students, aims to examine the image of the Mediterranean world in French literature from the Romantic period to the present. Multiple but convergent points of view will be taken in order to develop a global perspective. We will first concentrate on the origins of the theme by studying the idea of exoticism, particularly oriental exoticism beginning with the late 18th C. We will consider the genre of the "Voyage in the Orient" with brief insights from several major authors (Chateaubriand, Nerval). We will analyze in greater detail the Voyage en Espagne of Théophile Gautier, a narrative representative of the genre. The Lettres de mon Moulin of Alphonse Daudet, will demonstrate how in the 19th C., both in the fable and the realist novel, a picturesque image of the South in France (Languedoc and Provence) developed. We will also examine the influence of Classical Mediterranean civilizations on Giono, Valéry, Gide, Camus, and how this influence, important in the first part of the 20th C., helped form a very different image of the South. Literature from the Maghreb, particularly the novel of Mouloud Mammeri, La Colline oubliée will broaden our perspective on the French literature of the Mediterranean world.

In this course we will explore the complex and often difficult relations that have developed between literature and written journalism in France from 1830 to the present. We will first examine Balzac’s pejorative image, growing out of his own experience in this milieu, of the press and journalists in his novel Illusions perdues. It is this image that dominated literary representations of the press and that is evident again in Goncourt’s Charles Demailly, as well as in the second great 19th C. novel, Bel-Ami by Maupassant, that we will study in more depth. However this deprecatory image dramatically changes after 1880 under the influence of more modern writers, such as Zola, conscious of the possibilities that journalism offers to literature. Literature borrows new genres: the chronicle, the reporting. We will also study examples of great chroniclers : Zola, Maupassant, and then, in the 20th C., famous writer-reporters : Simenon, Kessel, Malraux. Finally we will analyse, using the work of two major authors, Camus and Mauriac, how the 20th C. writer uses the press as a forum to promulgate views on political and social issues, thereby achieving intellectual and moral authority. We will finish by considering the contemporary period examining whether the union of writer and journalist still exists in a period of general decline of the traditional written press (and literature itself?).

6645 Le Québec en images: cinéma québécois / Cinéma québécois

Quebec films offer a rich and diverse repertoire of works which delve primarily into the social identity of the largest French speaking culture in North America. Other predominant themes to be discussed focus more on the social and historical particularities of Quebec. These include: British colonization, Catholicism, winter, large families, the north, etc. This course will follow the evolution of filmmaking in Quebec, since its conception at the beginning of the 20th century, and focus primarily on two defining decades. The first, known as the Quiet Revolution (1960-1980), is considered as the starting point of contemporary Quebecois cinema. From this period emerged the National Film Board of Canada, several of Quebec’s most influential film producers: Jutra, Brault, Perreault, Carle, Arcand, etc., as well as various styles of cinematography, most notably, "cinema direct" or candid eye. The second part, the New Generation (1990-2000) will show how a group of young filmmakers provided a second wind to an ailing industry. Through the use of more modern filming techniques and a post-modern approach to script writing which focused less on social and political themes, they were instrumental in gaining international recognition for Quebecois cinema. For each period, we will discuss and analyze several filmmakers and their selected works.

The figure of the intellectual is a typical feature of French literary, political, and even artistic life. The word was first used at the end of the 19th century in the wake of the "Dreyfus Affair" when a group of journalists and writers took side with the unjustly condemned Captain and accused the French army of forgery. However it had already been a long time since French writers had fought for justice in the debates of their time.
The course will introduce two major representatives of this conception based on the connivance between politics and literature for which words can make a difference in the evolution of politics. Using a text-study methodology, analyses will range from the great precursors, Voltaire and Rousseau to the contemporary period, the so-called "postmodern" movement and Michel Foucault, up to the contemporary work of Elisabeth Badinter.
The course includes a methodological perspective. Students can validate their credits in methodology (equivalent to 6525) by electing specific exercises (French type) for their evaluation or they can choose standard evaluation without validating the methodology unit.

In the postcolonial world of images, cinema of minorities stemming from immigration and displacement (cinema of « beur », suburbs, or immigration) mixes with cinema of those who rose to political liberty (in Southern or Northern Africa) or people coming from the French West Indies or Caribbean. This course will explore particularities and generalities of these dynamic movements. Through a large selection of films, novels and authors coming from French and Francophone regions (Black South Africa, North Africa, French continental, metropolitan or extra continental, France’s overseas territories and departments, French Caribbean and West Indies), the analysis will study esthetic forms and thematic, political and cultural discourses.

6705 L’Histoire de Paris, de Lutèce à nos jours. / The History of Paris from Lutetia to the Present

In this course we shall study the main stages in the development of Paris, from the Gallo-Roman city of Lutetia to our days. The resources used will be: archeological finds, engravings, city maps, paintings and photographs (19th C.). Methodology will be based on urban sociology, history of urban development, history and art history.
The first part will be devoted to Lutetia, the Gallo-Roman city (52-253AD) and we shall study the archeological finds, the temples, the baths and the theaters. We shall also stress the importance of the progress of Christianity after the Edict of Milan by Emperor Constantine.
The next part will be about Paris in the Middle-Ages: the problem of the fortifications, Philippe-Auguste, Charles V, the king’s Palace, the Ile de la Cité and the Notre-Dame cathedral. In the third part we shall deal with the introduction of Italian architectural models in the 16th C. and their adaptation to the situation in Paris, and with royal urban development in the 17th C. We shall then concentrate on the history of the Louvre, from the original Castle in 1210 to the Greater Louvre by Pei in 1997. The following part will take us to a fundamental shift in the development of Paris: the urban restructuring imposed by Napoleon III and carried out by the Seine prefect Haussmann (1853-1870). The World Fairs will be studied, specifically that of 1889 with the Eiffel tower. The final chapter will be about the Orsay railway station (1900) and its transformation into a museum in 1986. The Défense business quarter will be the final object of our study.

In a virtual context, can we be certain that we are dealing with "real" Francophones? We will investigate these issues together through the exploration of various resources and technological means of communication… as well as through the creation of our own virtual worlds.

This workshop is meant for those who have always dreamed of writing and never dared to start. Generally, the novel intimidates the neophyte by its thickness, its complicated characters, and its unpredictable plot. As for the short novel, it seems difficult because of its density and its precision. The tale is thus best indicated to liberate the beginner. Because it is the most accessible literary genre, and the most universal, it is also the best entrance into the literary world. Participants will enrich their style and imagination, taking as a starting point some African tales. This way, they will kill two birds with one stone: practice the difficult art of writing, while being initiated into the African culture. Participants will write an interactive tale that will be published in La Gazette de l'École française. Each participant will write 10 pages minimum.

Deux fois par semaine l'atelier tennis vous permettra de pratiquer l’un de vos sports préférés, en même temps que vous continuerez à communiquer efficacement en français dans un contexte ludique. Le tournoi de tennis de l'École française, véritable fête du tennis à laquelle les joueurs de tous niveaux sont conviés, couronnera cette activité.

Vous avez envie de faire du sport ou tout simplement de vous détendre après une journée de travail intense ? L'équipe de volley-ball de l'école française vous ouvre grandes ses portes. Ambiance sportive et conviviale assurée ! Deux rendez-vous hebdomadaires pour les entraînements : "Le volley-ball, c'est aussi une autre manière de communiquer en français!"
24. Le Golf (S. Muller)
Cet atelier s'adresse à des golfeurs déjà expérimentés, qui, plutôt que de jouer seuls, préféreront se retrouver à plusieurs, (par groupes de quatre au maximum) pour perfectionner à la fois leur jeu et leur français. Vu le modeste handicap de l'animatrice de cet atelier, son rôle ne consistera pas à dispenser des conseils techniques, mais à effectuer, une ou deux après-midi par semaine, les réservations et à organiser, le cas échéant, des compétitions amicales, selon le désir des participants. Cet atelier n'a d'autre ambition que de favoriser des rencontres et des échanges, à la fois stimulants et détendus, entre tous les passionnés de golf de l'École française.
