Asa Hemenway Journal
In collaboration with the Friends of Art, the Friends of the Library recently acquired the rare manuscript journal, Siamese maps and artifacts collected by Asa Hemenway, Middlebury Class of 1835. Jointly purchased in the Fall of 2010, the maps, a hanging bowl, were acquired by Hemenway during this 10-year sojourn as a Missionary to Siam (now Thailand). Written aboard ship on his return trip to the United States in 1850, the journal reflects Hemenway's regretful departure from Siam following the closing of the Siamese mission by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Hemenway had traveled as one of three Middlebury alumni in a four-member mission to Siam in 1840.
