OVERVIEW

With over one million holdings comprising books, periodicals, government documents, archives, recordings, microfilm and microfiche, the Library provides a wealth of research materials, both in print, online, and in recorded form. Our collection is particularly strong in languages to support our summer Language School programs.

The Music and Science branch libraries are among the strongest collections among liberal arts colleges in the Northeast. We also are the oldest repository for U.S. federal documents in Vermont, as well as a repository of many unique Vermont historical documents.

Our Special Collections include the Abernethy Library of first edition American imprints, Emerson, Thoreau and Frost books and papers, and field recordings of folk songs, fiddle tunes and ballads collected by Helen Hartness Flanders throughout New England from the 1930s to early 1960s.

Armstrong Science Library

The James I. and Carol Aymar Armstrong Science Library, housed within McCardell Bicentennial Hall, and renamed the Armstrong Library, holds over 108,000 volumes, including bound journals and government documents as well as monographs.
The Armstrong Library collection is developed to provide curriculum support in the fields of biology, chemistry and biochemistry, environmental studies, geography, geology, physics, and psychology. Materials are collected in print, microform, and digital formats. It currently subscribes to over 350 journals in these areas.  Important indexing and abstracting services, such as the Web of Science and Medline, are networked, affording the most current access to scientific literature.

Music Library

Printed Music. The library collects materials for the study of all types of music in the forms of full scores, miniature and study scores, vocal scores, and parts. Representative selections of the complete works of composers and historical editions are available for study in the library. There is also a significant collection of performance materials for solo works and chamber music, and the music department maintains a separate collection of scores and parts for chorus, band, and orchestra.
Recordings and Videos. The library houses more than 15,000 CDs, kept in closed stacks. A number of recordings can be found on LP. Please reqest LP call numbers at the desk and they will be ready to be picked up within 24 hours. The library collects VHS video cassettes, laser discs, and DVDs of operas, musicals, musical performances, documentaries about music, and music instructional videos which are also kept in closed stacks. Recordings can be obtained by requesting the items by call number at the circulation desk.
Books and Journals. The library houses all of the books and periodicals pertaining to music, as well as a reference collection for music. Current periodicals are displayed alphabetically by title and bound issues are shelved by call number with the book collection. Some back issues of periodicals are also available on microfiche or microfilm.

The Davison Library supports the summer Bread Loaf School of English.

Midd's Digital Initiatives

LIS is taking the lead in creating and collecting a set of digital resources for the Middlebury College community. Drawing from materials in the Library's Special Collections, the Vermont Collection, projects done in partnership with the faculty, as well as local organization such as the Sheldon Museum, we are digitizing images, manuscripts, sound and video, and creating interactive maps and books.
