At Middlebury College, printed maps and atlases are located in both Armstrong Library and the Main Library. You may find you need to use both libraries to find all the sources you are looking for. Students, faculty and staff who cannot locate a desired map in the Middlebury College Libraries can borrow maps through Interlibrary Loan.

In most cases the best place to start your research is the Middlebury College Maps and GIS subject guide. If you have trouble navigating these sources they can be filtered by clicking the All Subjects link at the top of the page and then restricting the Maps and GIS subject guide based on “Step 2: Select source types”.

Scope of Map Collections

Generally, Armstrong Library has printed sheet maps, books, and journals related to human and physical geography and geology. Armstrong also holds the College’s collection of topographical maps, including U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) topographical quadrangles.

The Main Library has most political and social science publications and almost all government publications, including many maps produced by government agencies other than the USGS. For example, the Main Library holds the College’s extensive collection of maps made by the CIA.

The Main Library also has a large number of books dealing with the geography of nations, regions, and other places around the world, as well as many of the College’s reference atlases.
