Founded by Robert Buckeye, then Special Collections Librarian & Abernethy Collection Curator, in 1986, the Friends of the Library is an organization whose membership draws on the entire Middlebury College Family. The Friends are passionate about extending the Library's impact on the Middlebury campus and community as a whole.
Gifts from the Friends of the Library contribute to the acquisition of unique library materials, help to support the Abernethy lecture series, and underwrite special programming and publication projects. In the past few years, the Library has witnessed a year of transition and growth. Among the most notable changes have been the merger of Library Services and Information Technology Services into LIS (Library and Information Services), a dynamic institution that will effectively serve both students and faculty, as well as the greater community. This coming year we will see the opening and dedication of a new library for the 21st Century, the most significant event in the history of Middlebury College libraries since the opening of Starr Library more than a century ago. In recognition of this milestone, the Friends of the Library have contributed funds in support the installation of a mural documenting the history of libraries and Friends who have helped them to grow and flourish at Middlebury College.
