Printed music
The library collects materials for the study of all types of music in the forms of full scores, miniature and study scores, vocal scores, and parts. Representative selections of the complete works of composers and historical editions are available for study in the library. There is also a significant collection of performance materials for solo works and chamber music, and the music department maintains a separate collection of scores and parts for chorus, band, and orchestra.
Recorded music
Recordings are available as compact discs or (to a much lesser extent) cassettes and are kept in closed stacks. They can be obtained by requesting the items by call number at the circulation desk. A number of recordings can be found on LP. Please reqest LP call numbers at the desk and they will be ready to be picked up within 24 hours.
Video Recordings
The library collects VHS video cassettes, laser discs, and DVDs of operas, musicals, musical performances, documentaries about music, and music instructional videos which are also kept in closed stacks. They can be obtained by requesting the items by call number at the circulation desk. Video recordings related to other disciplines are available in the Main Library.
Books, Periodicals, and Microforms
The library houses all of the books and periodicals pertaining to music, as well as a reference collection for music. Current periodicals are displayed alphabetically by title and bound issues are shelved by call number with the book collection. Some back issues of periodicals are also available on microfiche or microfilm.
