Catalog

Music of Latin America can be located through the catalog using the standard Name, Subject, and Call Number indexes. Materials can also be limited by material type (e.g., books, serials, recordings, video recordings) by choosing the desired format from the pop-up menu for type of material.

The Subject search is the most useful for locating most materials on this topic. A name can also be entered to find books about a person. There are different search strategies depending on whether you are looking for popular, folk, or classical music. Also, searches can be limited to books, printed music, recordings, videos, etc. by selecting the appropriate material type from the pop-up menu immediately below the box where search terms are entered. The following subject headings are useful for finding materials on the music of Latin America:

Calypso (Music)

Folk music—Latin America (or substitute the name of any country from this region)

Folk songs, Spanish—Latin America  (or substitute the name of any country from this region)

Mariachi

Music—Latin America (or substitute the name of any country from this region)

Popular music—Latin America (or substitute the name of any country from this region)

Reggae music

Salsa

The subject search is the most effective means of locating popular and folk music. Recordings by a specific artist or by a specific composer can be found with a Name search. This can also be used to find performances by a specific artist. A name search is the best way to locate classical music although it does require that you have done enough prior research to know the names of composers. You can determine the names of major composers from different countries by reading the article on that country in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (Ref. ML100.N48 2001). It is important to enter the names in reverse order, e.g.,

Baca, Susana

Fernandez, Pedro

Gilberto, João

Nascimento, Mílton

Piazzolla, Astor

Revueltas, Silvestre

Shakira

Books about popular and folk music in Latin America are located under call numbers ML3565-ML3575. Books containing printed popular and folk music are shelved under number M1681-M1694. These numbers can also be used in a Call Number search.

Indexes

The following sources identify periodical articles and books. When using any index, it is important to note its scope and period of coverage.

Periodicals and Books

Music Index. Detroit: Information Coordinators; Warren Mich.: Harmonie Park Press, 1949-1996. Index Ref ML118.M84
This is the most comprehensive index for materials about music. It primarily includes citations for periodical articles, articles in conference proceedings, Festschriften, etc. as well as citations for books.

Répertoire international de littérature musicale (International Inventory of Music Literature: RILM) New York: International RILM Center, 1967- . Index Ref ML1.I83 and on-line up to the present through FirstSearch

RILM provides citations and abstracts for books and articles about music. The coverage is international and emphasizes scholarly literature. Although there is some overlap with Music Index, the duplication between the two is not great. Both sources complement one another.

International Index to Music Periodicals. Alexandria, Va.: Chadwyck-Healey, 1996-. On-line.

IIMP draws its current content from more than 300 international music periodicals from over 20 countries, and also indexes feature music articles and obituaries appearing in The New York Times and The Washington Post. IIMP covers nearly all aspects of the world of music, from the most scholarly studies to popular music. Every IIMP record in the current file (1996 forward) contains an abstract. There is selective coverage of music periodicals before 1996.

The History of Music: An Index to the Literature Available in a Selected Group of Musicological Publications. Ernst C. Krohn. St. Louis: Baton Music Co., 1958. Ref ML113.K77 1958
This work is useful for music periodicals published before 1949. A selected number of periodicals from the late nineteenth century through January 1952 are represented in this index.

HAPI Online. Hispanic American Periodicals Index (http://hapi.gseis.ucla.edu/)
HAPI contains bibliographic citations to articles from over 400 scholarly journals published in the United States and Latin America in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Coverage is from 1970 to the present. Available through UCLA, Library Information Systems and on CD ROM.

Academic One File On-line. Interdisciplinary article index covering all subjects in over 10,000 academic-related journals and magazines (the majority with full-text).  Includes all the content of Expanded Academic Index ASAPCoverage: 1980 - present. Also includes New York Times full-text content back to 1995. It is a general periodical database. Because of its limited scope, those needing more comprehensive coverage of music periodicals should refer to Music Index or RILM.

Arts and Humanities Search. Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information, 1980- . On-line through FirstSearch
This is a database of citations of journals in all areas of the arts and humanities including music, which can be particularly useful when researching interdisciplinary topics. Although it contains more citations to music journals than IAC cited above, it is still limited in its coverage of music. Those needing more comprehensive coverage should consult Music Index or RILM.

WorldCat. Dublin, Ohio: OCLC, 1972- . On-line. (Select WorldCat from the database listings linked to the Middlebury Library Catalog.)
This is the database of the On-line Computer Library Center which contains citations to materials in thousands of libraries throughout the world. It has one of the largest databases of citations to printed music. Although the database was established in the 1970s, it contains information on much older materials as well. At the beginning of a search be sure to limit by type to "scores." This will give more accurate results.
