Exterior Front - iconIn October, 2004, a week-long celebration of the new Library was highlighted by the Abernethy Lecture Series, the Clifford Symposium, the formal Library dedication ceremony, and the Inauguration of Ronald D. Liebowitz as Middlebury College's 16th President. The celebration included performances by local artists and an internationally recognized dance troupe, and several special lectures, as detailed in the scheduled below.

Professor Murray is an internationally recognized interactive designer, the director of Georgia Tech's graduate program in Information Design and Technology, and of the Laboratory for Advanced Computing Initiatives, and a member of Georgia Tech's interdisciplinary GVU Center.

 

Thursday, October 7

7:30 p.m.  "Copyrights and Copywrongs: Innovation and Intellectual Property in a Digital Age"  - Dana Auditorium

Siva Vaidhyanathan is an Assistant Professor at New York University and author of The Anarchist in the Library  (Basic Books, 2004).
Nicholas R. Clifford Symposium: The Technology of the Word

The Constitution of the United States gives Congress the power "to promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries."  More than two centuries after those words were written, what is the proper balance between the rights of copyright holders and copyright users in a world in which information can be manipulated, copied, stored, and downloaded nearly instantaneously? 

Immediately following:  Panel discussion with Janet Murray, Siva Vaidhyanathan and Middlebury faculty and students.  Followed by a reception.  Location TBD

2:00 p.m.  Bandaloop performance - Storrs Avenue side of the new library

Project Bandaloop honors nature, community, and the human spirit through dance. The company creates a blend of dance, sport, ritual, and environmental awareness. Inspired by the possibilities of climbing and rappelling, the choreography draws on aerial, vertical and horizontal movement to craft dances, many site-specific.

2:30-4:00 p.m.  Atlantic Crossing performs Vermont folk music. Harmann Library Periodical Reading Room
