Computing & Library Information: Getting started in the new year
September 06, 2007
Computer set-up, passwords, library research, and more
Welcome to campus, especially to new students, faculty, and staff!
Here are a few services that may be help in getting started:
Configure your computer for access to the College network:
- stop by the main library lobby and talk with a staff member at the Helpdesk - all the better, bring your laptop with you.
Microsoft Office for your personal computer:
- at the main library circulation desk, you may check out a CD that has a licensed versions Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (e-mail) that you can install on your personal computer - this program is available to students, as well as for a personal home computer of a faculty/staff member.
Passwords
- especially for returning students, staff, and faculty, this is a great time to enhance the security of your computer and files by creating a new password. On the web, go to go.middlebury.edu/password to re-set your password for access to e-mail and file servers. In BannerWeb, follow the links for Personal Information after you log on to re-set your 6-digit PIN.
Reserve Course Readings, Videos, CDs:
- stop by the circulation desk in the main library, as well as the Armstrong Science Library in McCardell Bicentenniel Hall and the Music Library in the Center for the Arts, for information about "reserve readings" for your courses.
CDs and DVDs:
- while you're in the Music Library, check out the thousands of CDs that you can borrow. And in the main library, check the "browsing" shelves right behind the information desk for our expanded collection of DVDs that may be checked out for private viewing.
Other questions about our services and getting started with research and assignments?
- in the main library, feel free to inquire at the Information Desk, Reference Desk, and Media Lab for help in learning about the many services provided by LIS, including research assistance with your homework assignments and using multimedia images, sound, and film clips in your course projects, and more.
And explore our web site for information and documentation about computing documentation, research resources, and more.
