But first, a little explanation. What is GIS? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based systems which allow us to learn more about our surroundings by gathering, storing, analyzing and displaying geographic and numeric data. These "systems" can incorporate technologies as simple as digital maps and census figures, and as complex as satellite networks and powerful GPS (global positioning system) receivers. At Middlebury College, GIS is utilized most often in Geography, Geology and fields related to Environmental Studies, but its ability to show spatial relationships and changes over time makes it useful in just about any field. That's where Chris comes in. His job is to help students, faculty and staff across campus use GIS no matter what their subject interest or expertise. For more information, advice and assistance contact Chris Rodgers Rodgers, GIS Intern, at cmrodger@middlebury.edu, x5512, 209 Armstrong Library.
