If you use an electronic calendar solution (Outlook, Entourage, etc.) carefully review the information that follows regarding changes in Daylight Savings Time that are impacting campus systems, and may have an impact on your calendar.
If you use an electronic calendar: Review all appointments in your calendar between the dates of March 11 - April 1, 2007 AND October 28 - November 4, 2007 (referred to as the extended DST period) for possible erroneous appointment times (an hour too early/too late).
Review all appointments in your calendar between the dates of March 11 - April 1, 2007 AND October 28 - November 4, 2007 (referred to as the extended DST period) for possible erroneous appointment times (an hour too early/too late).
Recommendations to help minimize confusion during the affected date ranges:
- Give extra attention to meetings and appointments scheduled between March 11, 2007 to April 1, 2007 and October 28, 2007 to November 4, 2007.
- Include the time of the meeting in the e-mail request so that invitees can double check the correct meeting time (such as, "Project brainstorming - 11:00 A.M. Eastern Time").
- Exercise caution with the appointments and meetings in the extended DST period. When in doubt, verify the correct time with the organizer.
- View any appointments that fall into these date ranges as suspect until you communicate with all meeting invitees to make sure that the item shows up correctly on everyone's calendar both internally and externally.
- Be aware of appointments in the affected times, especially on laptops, self-supported machines, OWA, PDAs, Blackberries etc.
- Don't forget to update your windows based personal home machines, go to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_topissues
Read on for more detail:
Daylight Saving Time (DST) legislation has changed the start/end of DST. DST will start on March 11, 2007 rather than the first Sunday in April. Because of this change (and the change in the fall), all computers and servers either have been or will need to be upgraded to accommodate the date changes. LIS has been performing these upgrades to 100+ campus servers and systems over the past few weeks. However, some of the impacts on users as these upgrades are applied cannot be reliably remedied in an automated/system-wide fashion by LIS so will require action on your part. On Sunday, February 25th, we applied the necessary upgrades to our campus Microsoft Exchange environment which supports our campus-wide calendar solution. At this time, any appointments made before the upgrades were performed may have to be shifted manually by one hour to be accurate. Note that this potential impact will only affect meetings and or appointments scheduled during the extended DST period.
History of the legislation:
In August of 2005 the United States Congress passed the Energy Policy Act, which changes the dates of both the start and end of daylight saving time (DST). When this law goes into effect in 2007, DST will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November) than what had traditionally occurred.
In the spring of 2007, the start dates and the end dates for daylight saving (DST) time in the United States will change to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The dates will change as follows:
DST In 2007 In previous years
Start date Second Sunday in March (11th), 2:00 a.m. First Sunday in April, 2:00 a.m.
End date First Sunday in November (4th), 2:00 a.m. Last Sunday in October, 2:00 a.m.
