WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Please note: Basic mouse and computing navigation skills are assumed unless otherwise noted in the workshop description.

Audacity

This workshop teaches you to import, edit and export your audio clips for use as stand-alone files or in other applications. The software is cross platform but will be taught on Macs.

Blogs, Wikis, MMOGs, Oh My!

We’ll take a look at a variety of Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies and help you answer the question "Which do I use and why?" as well as discuss how they can be used in an educational environment.

Dreamweaver Introduction

Come discover how easily you can create a Web site. You’ll learn to navigate the Dreamweaver work environment, create a basic Web page using text, graphics and tables, create links and image maps, and upload your pages to a file server. Dreamweaver works on PC and Mac platforms. The workshop will be taught on Macs.

Flash

Flash has become the standard for web delivery of video (think YouTube). This workshop will teach the basics of animation, and how to import and export using this powerful tool.

iDVD

Learn to create DVDs using this simple tool for Macs. From elegant, studio-quality menus to basic kiosk loops, this workshop will help you make your next Sundance sensation available to your clamoring fans.

Illustrator: Beyond Basics

This 90 minute workshop will build on the basics from the first workshop. We will explore new tools, editing paths, gradient meshes, compound paths, and more. Illustrator works on PC and Mac platforms. The workshop will be taught on Macs.

Illustrator: Creating Basic Drawings

Ever wonder how those beautiful banners on the front of CFA are made? This 90 minute introductory workshop you’ll learn to identify and use basic drawing tools in Adobe Illustrator to produce everything from flyers to posters. Illustrator works on PC and Mac platforms. The workshop will be taught on Macs.

iMovie For Your Life (3-part series)

It’s not just for home movies! This workshop will provide the skills you need to edit movies in Apple’s iMovie. You'll learn to import video, still images and sound, edit the video footage, add effects, transitions and titles. Finally, you will learn to export your movie to a format that you can share with your friends and family. The workshop will be taught on Macs and will meet every Tuesday from October 9 through October 23. Each part builds on knowledge learned in the previous session. Please sign up only if you can commit to all three sessions.

InDesign: Creating Basic Publications

This 90 minute introductory workshop will provide the basic skills you need to do page layout for brochures, fliers, invitations, etc., in Adobe InDesign. You'll learn to identify and use InDesign elements, create and modify text and graphic frames, use master pages to design document layout, thread and wrap text, and prepare files for print and the Web. InDesign works on PC and Mac platforms. The workshop will be taught on Macs.

InDesign: Creating Publications for Reprographics

In this workshop we will take our knowledge from the basic workshop and learn the details of how to prepare the perfect file for delivery to Reprographics. The methods you learn in this workshop will benefit both you and the staff in Reprographics: reducing time, costs, and frustration. Great stuff if you send InDesign files to Reprographics for printing. Prerequisite InDesign: Creating Basic Publications or equivalent background is needed for this workshop.

In 90 minutes you'll learn how to crop, resize, and adjust basic image properties, along with how to save your work in an appropriate format and size using this simple but powerful tool that comes on all Macs. This workshop will be particularly helpful for people who need to do simple editing work with photos without the complexities of Photoshop.

MackonMacs (Drop-in Sessions)

Join Mack for a bring-your-lunch-and-feed-your-brain time of questions, answers and demonstrations featuring everything Mac. Located in the Wilson Multimedia Development Lab, this is a time for faculty, staff, and students to learn and share tips, trips, and shortcuts that make productivity, learning, and fun more..., well, fun. These are drop-in workshops. No registration is required. If you have any questions or suggestions for topics, please email them to mroark@middlebury.edu.

Second Life

Second Life is a virtual world where anything is possible. Many corporations and universities are establishing a presence in Second Life. Come take a tour. You will build an avatar, learn to move, and we will explore some interesting interactive technology and educational sites.

SnapZ Pro/QuickTime Pro: Capturing and Producing Video

You will learn to capture video and screen action using SnapZPro. These captures can be used in video editing software or as stand-alone movies. We will also explore the power of QuickTime Pro for making quick movies and slideshows. The SnapZ Pro portion of this workshop is a demonstration. The QuickTime Pro portion will be hands-on participation. The workshop will be taught on Macs.
