Urgent: Emergency Security Patch Needs to Be Applied!

If you use a Windows computer on the Middlebury campus, at home, or at another location, please pay attention to this message. If you use only Macintosh computers, you can safely ignore this message.

Microsoft has released a security patch for a vulnerability "with a maximum severity of Critical" for all versions of the Windows Operating System.

  • If you leave your Windows computer on for the night here on the Middlebury campus, the patch will be applied to your computer and it will be restarted overnight.
  • If you shut your off your Windows computer before leaving the Middlebury campus tonight, you will be required to apply the patch as soon as you turn on your computer in the morning, and the patch will require a restart.
  • If you use a Windows computer at home or at any other location, it is extremely important that you click on the Start menu in the lower left corner of your screen, select Microsoft Windows Update, or if you do not see that option:
    • Open Internet Explorer and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    • Follow the instructions on that page to download and install the most recent updates. Use "Express" update if that option is available.
    • Not doing so could jeopardize not only your computer, but those on any network you access remotely.

Microsoft has released a security bulletin, describing the reason behind the patch and the urgency. If you'd like to read more about the issue visit the page below.
