Upgrading my operating system?
Recently, Apple released their newest operating system, Snow Leopard. Microsoft has scheduled the release of Windows 7 for later this fall. With all new operating systems and updates, there is a potential for unintended consequences. When a new OS or update is released, we install it on the computers of a select group of people who check for connectivity, conflicts, and functionality. In the case of OS X Snow Leopard, we have already discovered some issues with server connectivity.
As exciting as a new operating system and all the new functionality it can bring may be, upgrading your College computer is not a job you should attempt on your own. LIS strives to keep the College owned computers as up to date as possible. We do not yet support Snow Leopard or Windows 7, nor will we in the near future. (or “nor will we until major technical hurdles have been addressed.”?)
The beginning of the semester is a busy time for everyone and if you choose to upgrade your College computer on your own, there may not be enough resources to restore your system in a timely manner. Please refrain from the temptation for the latest and greatest. We want your computing experience to be as hassle free as possible.
