Do PDAs, Blackberries and Smart Phones need to be registered?

No. Only devices that connect directly to the wired network need to be registered.

How will Schools Abroad, Monterey, and BLSE campuses be affected?

Only offices that are part of the Middlebury, VT campus will be affected. When individuals from other parts of the world bring their computers to the Middlebury campus and connect to the wired network, they will be required to register their computers before gaining access to the network.

Will there be any impact on Web Mail, Banner Web, or Banner client (INB)?

Individuals who are on-campus will not have access to any network or web-based service from their computer until it is registered. Off-campus access to these services will not be affected in any way.

What about my personal computer that I sometimes bring to work?

You will be required to register your personal computer before you can gain access to the Middlebury network.

How long does it take to register a computer?

If you’re registering a college owned computer or a Mac, the registration process takes 15-20 seconds.

If you’re registering a personal computer on the network you will be prompted to verify that you have up-to-date virus protection and to install Windows Updates before you’re allowed to register. If your computer is up-to-date the registration process will take just a few moments, if your computer requires updating, it could take a while depending on the speed of your computer and the number of updates required.

How often do I have to register my computer?

You must register your computer roughly once per year.

What about faculty members on sabbatical or staff members on leave?

The first time a faculty member or staff member connects their computer to the network they will be required to register.

Do I need to register shared computers in my office?

Yes. Any computer in a common area, research lab or a student work station will need to be registered before it will have access to the network.

How do guest speakers and visitors to campus register their computer?

When you plug a computer into the network that hasn’t been registered you will be prompted in a web browser to register as a guest or as a student/faculty/staff member. Guests should click on the Guest registration option (see the “Network Registration of Guest Computers” document). A guest registration does not connect the computer to the Middlebury network; it gives the computer an internet connection outside of the Middlebury network (as if they were off-campus). Guest registrations expire every morning at 4 a.m.

I have a consultant who doesn’t have a Middlebury username & password, but will need access to the Middlebury network, so having them register as a guest doesn’t help. What can I do?

Any faculty or staff member can register a computer on behalf of a guest or consultant if that individual needs access to the Middlebury network. It’s important that the consultant’s computer has up-to-date virus protection and that their operating system is up-to-date. If you register a consultant’s computer and that computer is identified as posing a security risk to the campus network, you will be contacted to assist LIS in resolving the problem.

How many computers can I register with my username and password?

There is no limit to the number of computers you can register. If a computer that you register is identified as posing a security risk to the campus network, you will be contacted to assist LIS in resolving the problem.

The building-by-building schedule doesn’t have Commons Offices. Why not?

The Commons offices are located in residence halls that have been part of Campus Manager for several years.

The building-by-building schedule has our building switching into Campus Manager at an inopportune time. What can I do?
