Creating an Athletics News Posting

Step 1: Navigating to the Location of the News Posting

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Navigate to http://www.middlebury.edu/athletics
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Log On
  4. Enter your username and password and click Logon
  5. If this is a General News posting:
    1. Click Athletics News in the left navigation column
    2. Click General News in the left navigation column
  6. If this is a team-specific news posting:
    1. Click Varsity Sports in the left navigation column
    2. Click the name of the sport in the center column
    3. Click News in the right navigation column

Step 2: Uploading Photos for a News Posting [If Necessary]

  1. Click Switch to Edit Site in the Edit Console
  2. Click Resource Manager in the Edit Console
  3. If this is a General News posting:
    1. Expand News
    2. Click the academic year for the news posting
  4. If this is a team-specific news posting:
    1. Click the name of the sport
  5. Click the Add New... button in the Resource Manager window
  6. Click the Browse... button in the Add Resource window
  7. Navigate to the location of the photo on the hard drive and click on the file
  8. Click Open
  9. Enter a short description of the photo in the Description text box
  10. Click OK
  11. Close the Resource Manager window

Step 3: Adding the News Posting

  1. If you are viewing a specially formatted list of News Postings, click Create New Page in the Edit Console and go to step 6.
  2. Click Create New Page (Choose Template) in the Edit Console
  3. Expand 0506 Templates
  4. Click News
  5. Click the Select icon to the right of News
  6. If this news item should appear on the main Athletics page, click the Sub-Site Home Page News Item check box
  7. If this news item is a featured item, which have photos that are 350px wide instead of the normal 120px wide, click the Featured Item (Large Photo) check box
  8. Enter a short description of the news item in the Short Description text area. This text will be displayed in the news items lists on team news pages and on the main Athletics page, if this is a Sub-Site Home Page News Item
  9. If there is a photo for this News posting
    1. Click the Image Settings link directly above the Caption text area
    2. Click Insert Shared Image
    3. If this is a General News posting:
      1. Expand News
      2. Click the academic year for the news posting
    4. If this is a team-specific news posting:
      1. Click the name of the sport
    5. Locate the photo in the list of resources
    6. Click the Select icon to the right og the photo
    7. If the Alternate Text field is blank, enter a short description of the photo in the Alternate Text box
    8. Click Insert
    9. You may also enter a caption for the photo in the Caption text area
  10. If this news posting should redirect the user to a different web page, enter the URL of that page in the URL text box. When the user clicks this news item in a news items list, they will be moved to that URL.
  11. The news posting will not appear in the list of news postings until the date in the Start Date text box. This is automatically set to the time you create this posting, meaning that the news item will be shown as soon as the posting is Saved and Approved. To change this date, click the Set Date/Time button below the Start Date text box and choose a new date and time from the popup calendar window.
  12. The news posting will not appear in the list of news postings on the main Athletics page past the date in the End Date text box. This value has no affect on the team-specific of General News lists of news items. To change this date, click the Set Date/Time button below the End Date text box and choose a new date and time from the popup calendar window.
  13. You may enter the user name of a person who should be listed as a Contact for this news item in the Contact text area. A person's user name is the first part of their email address, before the @. So the user name of jsmith@middlebury.edu is jsmith. 
  14. You may enter a long version of the news story in the Edit Window. This text will not be shown in the list of news items, but if the user click on this story in the list, they will be shown this more detailed version of the news item.
  15. Click Save New Page in the Edit Console
  16. Enter a name for the posting in the Name text box
  17. Enter a display name for the posting in the Display Nametext box
  18. Click OK 
  19. Click Approve in the Edit Console

Step 4: Finishing

  1. Click Log Off in the Edit Console
  2. Close Internet Explorer
