By using NExpress and InterLibrary loan (ILL), research materials which are unavailable or not in our collection are obtained from other libraries. Be sure to check midcat first before requesting items from other libraries.
What Can I Request ?
Many types of items can be borrowed. Books are usually borrowed in print copy. Newspapers are usually provided in microform covering multiple weeks. Journal articles are sent as photocopies or digital copies. Dissertations and theses are provided in print copy or in microform, if we can get them. See the section on Theses and Dissertations From Other Institutions for more details and options.
Materials usually not available for loan include: rare or fragile items, such as manuscripts, reference books, new books, and genealogical materials. If in doubt, request the material and we will let you know if we can't get it.
How Long Does It Take ?
Expect to wait 2 to 4 days for items requested via NExpress and 1 to 3 weeks for items using regular Interlibrary Loan. Most journal articles are scanned and sent electronically, resulting in quick delivery, although there is still processing time on both ends. In any case, don't wait until the last minute!
How Do I Make a Request ?
Search for the item in midcat to see if Middlebury owns the item. For journal articles, use the Journals A-Z tab in midcat and be sure to search by the name of the journal (or newspaper), NOT the article title or author.
If we don't have it or our copy is unavailable,
click on the NExpress icon
in your midcat results .
Follow on screen prompts to make your request. If the item can't be obtained via NExpress, the library will attempt to obtain it through regular interlibrary loan. Explanation of NExpress and detailed instructions on how to use it.
See the ILL FAQ for more details on regular ILL.
How Do I Receive Requested Material?
You will receive an email notification that will direct you where to pick up the item (if physically sent) or for electronic items, where to login to get it. (NExpress items will provide a link to My Midcat, ILL items will provide a link to ILLiad). See this section of the ILL FAQ for more details.
What Is the Loan Period ?
Usually three to four weeks, but the lending library determines the time period and any other restrictions. Renewals are allowed for NExpress items if there are no holds. However, you may not renew materials obtained through ILL, so plan your requests to arrive when you will be able to use them. You are responsible for the prompt and safe return of borrowed material.
