NExpress Libraries

Not only can Middlebury College students use the  button in Midcat to request items from a consortia of 6 other northeastern libraries, students can visit these libraries and check out items directly. These libraries are: Williams, Bates, Bowdoin, Wellesley, Colby, and Northeastern University.  See the NExpress page for full details.

University of Vermont (& other VT libraries)

Students can use UVM's libraries in person (check for exceptions during exam time) but must get advanced permission to borrow an item directly from UVM.  The student must fill out the appropriate form from our Circulation Desk and have a reference librarian certify the need. However, you can use Interlibrary loan to borrow from UVM indirectly.  We can usually get loanable materials from UVM within a week. More information and Form.

Ilsley Public Library (downtown Middlebury)

Just show your Middlebury College ID and you will qualify to get a Ilsley Library Card to check out materials directly. Ilsley has a nice collection of popular audio books and DVD's; children's literature, and other popular topics.

Other Libraries

For all other libraries materials are only loaned through interlibrary loan.

Access policies to all other academic and research libraries vary widely. In general, it is wise to contact a library in advance to determine if you will be granted access, at what level, and with what documents.

If a letter of introduction is required, request it at the Library Administration office located behind the Circulation desk of the Main Library.

Financial Assistance

If you need financial assistance for travel to another library, or photocopying costs, see Middlebury College-sponsored Funding page, especially the Senior Work Fund information.
