CHINESE
SCHINA
COVERAGE: From July 28, 1992 South China Morning Post has a wide news coverage with particular relevance to China, both economically and socially. With two bureaus in China, one in Beijing and one in Shanghai, this gives an edge to independent news coverage from that country. In addition to the latest coverage of local, regional and world, news, South China Morning Post also publishes articles of general interest including business, property, court cases, lifestyle, sports and medicine.
South China Morning Post is divided into two files. The "TSCHIN" file represents the original same-day version of South China Morning Post, the final editied version becoming available two to three days later in the "SCHINA" file. It is stressed here that the same-day data in "TSCHIN" may contain errors, duplicate documents and omissions which are subsequently corrected in the final version. However, the value of the TSCHIN file is obviously its currency. The same-day data will normally become available by about 3 AM EST. In the "2WEEK" file in the TOPNWS Library, the same-day versions are replaced by the final edited versions as they become available.
XINHUA
COVERAGE: From January 1, 1977 Xinhua, or New China News Agency, is the official news agency of the People's Republic of China. It is an authoritative source for information on Chinese government affairs, economic performance and Chinese views on world affairs. All Western news correspondents in Beijing rely on Xinhua's English-language news report to keep abreast of Chinese affairs. The agency reports on Chinese affairs, including the economy, industry, trade, agriculture, sports and culture. Coverage includes diplomatic changes and extensive international reporting often from Africa or the Middle East. Materials in the XINHUA file appear in lower case letters as they are transmitted. Publications and wire services use either the Wade-Giles or Pinyin dialect system of transliteration for Chinese names, for example, Peking and Beijing, Canton and Guangzhou, and China and Zhonghua. These words are equivalents in the NEXIS service; therefore, searching for one version will automatically retrieve the other.

CDSP
The Current Digest of the Soviet Press selects, translates and abstracts articles from the press of the Soviet Union. CDSP systematically surveys approximately 90 newspapers and periodicals that make up the most significant element of the Soviet press. Much of its material is drawn from Pravda, the official Communist Party newspaper; Izvestia, the official government paper; and Tass, the official wire service. Other items are drawn from Sovetskaya kultura, Literaturnaya gazeta, Ekonomicheskaya gazeta, regional newspapers and specialized economic magazines. CDSP does not survey scientific journals. Although it concentrates on politics, foreign affairs and economics, CDSP also covers Soviet reporting on such topics as agriculture, industry, literature, arts, law, medicine, education, religion, sports and family life. Three types of coverage are used. Some reports are marked "condensed text" or "excerpts" which may be long or short; ellipses indicate where material has been omitted. Reports marked "abstract" summarize articles in whole or part. Some items are marked "complete text" and contain the full text of official announcements, appointments, etc.
