To help advance science and improve human health, a new National Institutes of Health (NIH)  Public Access Policy ensures free public access to the published results of NIH funded research. The new policy requires researchers to submit articles* to PubMed Central , a free archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.
  * articles accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008
Quick facts from the NIH:
  • All peer reviewed articles arising from NIH funds are required to be submitted to PubMed Central
  • Submitting a manuscript usually takes less than 10 minutes
  • Many journals submit articles on behalf of authors
  • More questions? check the NIH Public Access FAQs for information on submitting articles, publisher information, copyrights, and more.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has developed a website and guide to assist research institutions in implementing the new policy. The guide is freely available online at http://www.arl.org/sc/implement/nih/guide/
      • Policy Overview
      • Institutional Responses
      • Retaining Rights
      • How to Deposit
      • Resources
According to ARL: "Reflecting the dynamic nature of campus implementation activities, the guide will be updated as more campuses release plans, resources, and tools that can serve as models for their peers."
