The MA degree in French offers three areas of specialization (see link to MA Degree Tracks, below) as alternatives to the traditional MA program; students will select only one specialization for their degree. The MA degree is comprised of twelve units of credit to be earned over a series of summers on the Vermont campus or in a combination of a summer in Vermont (i.e. the summer of "candidacy") and an academic year in Paris. Students who complete the degree requirements in Paris will write an MA thesis worth two units of credit; these students may also elect to return to Vermont for a second summer of graduate study in order to complete their degree.

In addition to students preparing for an MA or DML degree, the French School welcomes each summer "non-degree" students (i.e. candidates for degrees at other institutions, or individuals who want to take advanced courses in French).

Each student must successfully complete a preliminary summer of study (summer of candidacy) on the Vermont campus before being officially recognized as a degree candidate. During the summer of candidacy, students take three courses, chosen with an advisor and taking into consideration the results of placement testing.

Admission to the School in France is based on performance in the summer courses and on faculty recommendations.
