Sante Matteo
Sante Matteo was born in Petrella Tifernina (Province of Campobasso), in the Molise region of Italy, on 8 July 1948. He received a BA in French from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, in 1971. After serving in the U.S. Army he pursued graduate studies in French and Italian, receiving an MA in French (1976) from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and an MA (1977) and a PhD (1983) in Italian from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. From 1976 to 1979 he was an Instructor of Italian at Miami University of Ohio. From 1980 to 1989 he taught Italian language, culture, and literature, and French and Italian cinema at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, attaining the rank of tenured Associate Professor. In 1989 he returned to Miami University, where he is currently Professor of Italian and Coordinator of Italian Studies.
His scholarly interests span all periods of Italian literature, with an emphasis on the modern periods, as well as literary theory and cinema, with occasional forays into French literature and culture. His publications include six books: author of Textual Exile: The Reader in Sterne and Foscolo (1985) and Radici sporadiche: letteratura, viaggi, migrazioni (2007); co-editor of The Reasonable Romantic: Essays on Alessandro Manzoni (with Larry Peer, 1986), Italian Echoes in the Rocky Mountains (with Cinzia Donatelli Noble and Madison Sowell, 1990), Africa Italia: Due continenti si avvicinano (with Stefano Bellucci, 1999), and editor of ItaliAfrica: Bridging Continents and Cultures (2001); three edited volumes of the journal Italian Culture; and more than seventy articles, reviews, and other publications: from the 13th century’s Le Roman de la rose and Marco Polo, to Machiavelli in the 16th century, Vico and "Ossian" in the 18th, Foscolo and Manzoni in the 19th, to contemporary figures Giose Rimanelli and filmmakers Federico Fellini, Ettore Scola, and Bernardo Bertolucci. He has convened four national and international symposia, has organized and chaired over 70 conference panels and presentations, and has presented over 130 papers and invited lectures at professional meetings and colloquia and as guest speaker at other campuses. He has served on the Editorial boards of Italica, Italian Culture, and Machiavelli Studies and has held national offices in the Modern Language Association (1988-92) and the American Association for Italian Studies, serving as Executive Secretary and Editor of the AAIS newsletter, Il Gonfaloniere (1987-93), and as Editor of the association’s journal, Italian Culture (2001-2002).
