Entrance and exit scores for speaking (OPI), listening, reading and writing are advisory results in accordance with the levels described in the Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The major levels are novice (N), intermediate (I), advanced (A), superior (S), with sublevels of low (L), mid (M), and high (H) within each major level. (For example, a result of IH means intermediate high.) The high (H) sublevel is correlated with substantial, but not consistent, performance at the next major level. Test items are correlated with the Proficiency Guidelines, but the tests themselves are not officially sanctioned by ACTFL.
What do these levels mean? Novice level speakers, listeners, readers, and writers do not function autonomously in the language, but are moving toward that goal. Intermediate level speakers, listeners, readers, and writers are able to function in the language in simple or predictable contexts with small texts (sentences or groups of sentences). Advanced level speakers, listeners, readers, and writers are able to function in the language in complicated contexts with longer texts. Superior level speakers, listeners, readers, and writers can function with the language on a professional level and in speech make no patterned errors. (For more information about the proficiency guidelines, see the ACTFL web site at www.actfl.org.)
Entrance and exit scores for grammar are results indicating the degree of control of basic and sophisticated grammatical and syntactical structures of the Russian language, out of a total of 100 possible points.
