  • Casual Conversations about Student Access and Equity (3/28)

    Date: Thursday, March 28, 2024
    Time: 3:30pm - 5:00pm
    Location: CTLR (Davis Family Library 225)
    Join Tara Affolter, Faculty Director for Equity, Justice, and Inclusion, and Deirdre Kelly from the Disability Resource Center twice a month on Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 in the CTLR for some informal discussions on access and equity in the classroom. Some weeks will have focused dialogue around a designated issue. At every session, there will be time for questions, brainstorming, collaboration, and problem-solving. There might even be snacks, and there will always be free coffee and tea available. 
      March 14: Are you struggling to figure out the balance of AI, the honor code, and equitable practices?   March 28: Drop-in with your questions/concerns.  April 4: What is the difference between compliance and inclusion?We explore the many ways you can bring simple inclusive practices into your classroom.  April 18: Drop-in with your questions/concerns.  May 2: Can I have an extension? Let’s talk about how we can provide equitable supports as our semester draws to a close. 

  • Mellon Migration Workshop (3/29)

    The Axinn Center for the Humanities will be hosting a migration workshop funded by a Mellon grant about past and present migration to Vermont, including topics related to migrant rights and justice.  Ten representatives from Vermont organizations and businesses will join ten Middlebury Humanities faculty and some staff members to discuss questions of migration. The goal is to (1) raise and discuss themes, issues, and questions concerning migration to Vermont currently and in the past; and (2) introduce faculty to local Vermont organizations and representatives. The hope is that congenial and stimulating discussions will lead to fruitful partnerships and mutually-beneficial collaborations (via the Public Humanities Lab classes) between our Middlebury faculty, students, and local and regional organizations. Each faculty participant will receive $1,000 for participation. Applications for the March 29 workshop are due by February 19, 2024. Please complete an application HERE. Because one of the goals of the workshop is to introduce community partners to Middlebury faculty, we especially encourage applications from instructors who seek Vermont-based partners. We encourage those who participate in the workshop to also apply to participate in the planned Mellon Migration Institute.

  • AI Prompting Basics (3/29)

    DLINQ workshop on AI. Prompting matters. How you and your students interact with generative AI can have a big impact on how useful those tools are for supporting learning. This workshop introduces approaches to prompting and gives participants a chance to try prompting techniques in a hands-on way. We’ll also discuss how to teach students about prompting, and strategies for building prompting support into assignments that use generative AI. Register for this session

  • Funding for Strategic Initiatives Spring Deadline (4/1)

    The office of the Provost provides funding to support ideas and initiatives that reflect and advance Middlebury’s strategic priorities. The funding itself is from restricted gifts that were given to further Middlebury’s Strategic Framework. This call for proposals will be limited to projects with a budget of up to $10,000 that fit into one or more of the following: Advance innovations in digital methodologies across disciplines Further our global connections  Build upon Middlebury’s goals around intercultural communication and languages Integrate or connect existing efforts across Middlebury. These include our programs in California, Vermont, and Washington D.C., and sites that support Bread Loaf, the Language Schools, and the Schools Abroad Focus on expanding our commitment to the environment Promote lasting educational innovation The Provost’s Academic Council (PAC) will select projects that best forward our strategic initiatives without requiring long-term support beyond the initial funding and those that have a significant positive effect on the student experience. Note that requests that include faculty or staff pay or stipends will not be considered. The deadline to apply for this funding is April 1, 2024, at 5:00 PM Eastern. Notification of approval, denial, or “needs revision” will be sent by May 3.   • Deadline for Mellon Migration Public Humanities Labs Applications (4/10)

    The Axinn Center for Humanities encourages humanities professors to consider submitting a Mellon Migration PHL application for 2024-25. PHL classes have two distinctive components: they have some kind of hands-on or experiential dimension, and they are public-facing, often partnering or interacting with a local Vermont-based organization. You can read more about current and past Public Humanities Labs here. Applications for courses that focus on migration, whether locally, nationally, or internationally, including courses that cover the past or the present, are welcome. Faculty participating in the workshop and/or institute will be given priority. Mellon Migration PHL instructors will each receive a one-time stipend of $2,500. PHLs will be given enrichment funds of up to $1,000, and community partners will be compensated for their participation in the course (up to $7,500 per course).   • Center for Community Engagement AOE Funding Deadline (Summer and Fall Projects)

    The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) invites individuals (faculty or returning students) and teams (faculty, staff, students, and community partners) who are planning a community-based course or research project to apply for an Academic Outreach Endowment Grant. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for funding requests for community-based courses and research projects in all disciplines, with the below priority deadlines aligned with the course planning and registration period for any given semester.
