The recent earthquake in China, was felt in many parts of the country, including slight tremors in Hangzhou, but there have been no reports of casualties or structural damage in the city of Hangzhou as a result of the quake.

The 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck in Sichuan province has caused the death of more than 14,800 people with many more missing or unaccounted for, the state-run new agency, Xinhua, is reporting.

A few office towers and ZUT academic buildings were evacuated as a precaution on Monday the 12th, but authorities are reporting that no damage was sustained to any of these buildings. Sichuan is roughly 900 miles away from Hangzhou.

Our staff in China and the Middlebury Office of International Programs and Off-Campus Study are in contact with our host university partners in China, CET-Academic Programs, and the US Embassy, and we are getting regular updates from news sources both within and outside of China.

Operations at our Hangzhou site have been unaffected, and everything is running normally. Students have been asked to contact their parents to reassure them that they are fine.

School in China staff have advised students to take precautions during this period when aftershocks may occur. These include noting escape routes and avoiding the use of elevators.

We encourage our US partners and parents to keep updated on the situation by checking major news sites like CNN, the BBC, or the China Daily (www.chinadaily.com.cn). We also encourage you to call us if you have questions or concerns.
