During the orientation session in September (January, for spring semester students) students may wish to participate in visits to museums (eg. Musée d'Orsay, Musée Picasso, Louvre) or neighborhoods of historic interest (the Marais, Montparnasse, etc.).

Middlebury also normally organizes an overnight excursion each semester. Past fall excursions took the group to Bayeux (famous medieval tapestry), the D-Day landing beaches, and Mont St. Michel, and to Dordogne (Southwestern France), where they visited prehistoric caverns (Lascaux...) and medieval villages (Sarlat...). In the spring we have in past years visited the châteaux of the Loire, Monet's garden at Giverny, and Bourgogne.
