To maximize the effectiveness of your stay abroad, think about how an internship in a host organization will provide an in-depth experience and exposure to the host culture as well as the local work environment. This experience will also provide you with new knowledge and skills which can lead to a greater career, graduate school, and other opportunities in the future. Students interested in doing an internship should notify the International Programs and Off-Campus Studies of their intention to apply for an internship by May 16.

In Mainz, students have pursued internships at the "Mainzer Medienbuero," an agency organizing Mainz's development as "Medienstandort." One student did an internship at the famous "Gutenberg-Museum," worked with the historic printing machines and taught others how to use them. Openings at the "ZDF" (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen -- one of the two major public TV-stations) are available, though access cannot be guaranteed.
In Berlin, students have interned at the Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus, located in the Preussische Landtag. This internship provides you with a real opportunity to see German politics in the making. Students worked with one of the 'Abgeordneten,' did research, and where able to participate in the official 'Sitzungen.'
One student interned at an Art Gallery in order to augment her study of Art History.
Another student did an internship with the Department of Biochemistry. He became a fully integrated member of a group researching the processes of pain-production in the human body.
As in Mainz, opportunities are numerous, but access cannot be guaranteed.
