While the largest Romanesque cathedral at the Rhine River
dominates the city's "Marktplatz," almost 200.000 inhabitants and 35.000 students enrolled at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität determine the Mainzer way of life. Located at the Rhine River and in the middle of "Rheinhessen," one of Germany's most reknowned wine-regions, the city has a lot to offer.
Visit the "Bummeln" over cobble-stone streets as narrow as they are busy, or enjoy sitting back and watching while tasting local specialties in one of the numerous cafes and restaurants located at the "Marktplatz" surrounding the Cathedral.
Visit the famous Gutenberg-Museum, go shopping, or have Italian food.
Watch a show (Mainzer Kammerspiele) in the "Malakoff-Passage".

Given all this, you should have no difficulties in finding your own favorite spots. Don't miss the numerous tiny stores all over the Altstadt offering all kind of special fare, from jewellery to antique books.
If you're into music, whether classical or modern, don't miss the concerts in the beautiful atrium of the world-famous publishing house Schott. The acoustics are as breathtaking as the setting is beautiful. (If you've been looking for a specific sheet of music, this is the place to go!)
And: rumor has it that the huge park at the "Mainz-Süd" Train Station is excellent for hanging out or playing ultimate frisbee with friends:
